Re: The Longest Thread Ever v28

My most recent connection to England is my mom's grandfather, who was apparently supposed to have come across on the Titanic but was too late arriving at the dock and had to take a later, less sinky, ship.

Re: The Longest Thread Ever v28

Hey cool. My mother's grandparents were going to take the Titanic back to Canada, too, but minor complications due to pregnancy (which I believe meant my great grandmother was pregnant and being a weak woman would have an aversion to a rocking boat - psh, women) they decided against it.

Re: The Longest Thread Ever v28

Well la-dee-da.

Two of my grandparents on each side were abandoned by their parents and given to middle-class families because they were too fucking poor.
Lousy mining heritage.
My ancestors probably provided the coal to the Titanic and that's it.

Going a little farther back, I recently discovered that my likely Norse heritage comes from the namesake of the MacDougall Clan being the firstborn son of Somerled and Raghnailt. Somerled being King of the Hebrides, and Raghnailt being the daughter of Olaf the Red, Viking King of the Isle of Man.

Grandmother's father helped bring Japanese Buddhism to America. Grandfather's father told his kids, "We're in America, we will speak English, dammit." Otherwise, probably got poor Japanese farmer background.

Re: The Longest Thread Ever v28

To hear my grandfather(fathers side) tell it, my ancestors then known as surname "Gerard" rode with William I to help secure his throne. With all his his time spent overseas researching our genealogy I don't doubt his account of things.

A far less likely tale comes from my grandfather on my mothers side, and a book simply called The Peacock. A daunting read that claims his ancestors descend from the bastard offspring of Charlemagne. Which I've always assumed to be a wild claim, and a vain attempt at notoriety.

Re: The Longest Thread Ever v28

Oh yeah, little anniversary just past - Nevermind is 20 years old. I can understand that the vast majority of members here (who also don't read the spam zone) have no clue what that is, but if you were around and conscious enough to be listening to music, it was the day the 80s were put away and hard, raw and driving music and lyrics were thrust into the spot light, dragging along a large group of counterculture musicians making the frustrated and obscure gen-X the mainstream - and eventually killing of its poster boy.

Not sure it could have happened any other way.

In any case, it defined early 90s if not all the 90s in terms of music and it was a hell of a time to be listening. Given that these days music is highly dominated by an 80s like polish across all genres of music, countless Michael Jackson/Madonna clones and glorified karaoke, it's worth noting that there was a time that a small time, different album that the record company didn't even do anything to truly promote conquered the charts and changed the landscape of music.

Re: The Longest Thread Ever v28

Nevermind, and the subsequent rise of Nirava, was a major reason why youth subcultures became exploited and commercialised by companies who started to realise that insecure teenagers were an unexploited revenue source.

Pardon me if I'm not celebrating.

Re: The Longest Thread Ever v28

Right, let's blame Nirvana for the stupidity of teenagers and the greed of corporations. It's so simple.

Re: The Longest Thread Ever v28

I'm not blaming Nirvana for anything. I like Nirvana.

The 20th anniversary re-release of Nevermind is something cooked up by Universal so they can sell more Nirvana t-shirts to kids who weren't around for grunge in the first place.

Wake me up when it's the 20th anniversary of Kurt's death. That's a day worth marking.
