I'm not sure if that first sentence is you saying that art has meaning because someone created the art of because someone created the meaning, if it's the latter than that's true. But if the person who created it did indeed create it with no meaning, doesn't mean that people cannot gain something out of it and create their own meaning. Or even get a completely different meaning than what the artist was trying to get across in the first place.

It isn't the art that created that meaning though so why does it deserve that merit in the first place. The person who creates the purpose for a meaningless art deserves credit for creating good out of bad. The dump on a napkin is still meaningless even after someone creates a subjective purpose for it.

The dump on the napkin served as the reason for the viewer creating that meaning, while the meaning can be applied to many other things (as can every meaning), it'll be connected with that dump on the napkin. Thus giving that dump on the napkin a little bit of credit that it deserves.

Holy crap I'm arguing with you, Retreat! RETREAT!

Seriously. Stop it... everything. Go to Thailand, live a little, meet a nice lady-boy... whatever.

How can you credit meaning to a dump napkin that has no meaning? That is what I am not picking up. If that dump napkin has no meaning at all, yet is credited for a meaning, then you are giving it something it does not deserve.

I have my fair share of a social life, which is why I have not posted that much lately. Fortunately for me, I also have social skills. This includes the social skill of not censoring people from other people because I disagree with them.

You are the college student. You should know this one.

I'm simply saying that if that dump on a napkin was put out there with no meaning whatsoever yet someone managed to create their own meaning from it and associated it with it, then the least the dump on the napkin deserves is the little bit of credit for being the trigger for that meaning the viewer created.

So? I still stand by my statement of telling you to go to Thailand for a while. Or Mother Russia.

No object can choose to give new meaning to itself. The will to change its meaning did not originate in the object so the object can not be credited at all.

Then that is where we heavily disagree. =] And for the sake of my sanity, I'll not bother further.

BUT, this is now your thread. Take care of it and keep your eye on the moon.

And I am dreaming of them on the plains
Dirtying up their beds
Watching for some sign of rain to cool their hot heads

And how dare that you send me that card when I'm doing all that I can do
You are forcing me to remember when all I want is to just forget you

If the tiger shall protect her young then tell me how did you slip by
All my instincts have failed me for once
I must have somehow slept the whole night

And I am dreaming of them with their kill
Tearing it all apart
Blood dripping from their lips and teeth sinking into heart

And how dare that you say you'll call
When you know I need some peace of mind
If you have to take sides with the animals
Won't you do it with one who is kind

And if the hawks in the trees need the dead
If you're living you don't stand a chance
For a time though you share the same bed
There are only two ends to this dance

You can flee with your wounds just in time or lie there as he feeds
Watching yourself ripped to shreds and laughing as you bleed

So for those of you falling in love keep it kind
Keep it good
Keep it right
Throw yourself in the midst of danger but keep one eye open at night

Cash is good, but he can be boring sometimes. The fact that Bob Marley was mentioned makes me a little hesitant.

What beef you got with Marley. Sure, the man's overhyped because he's basically the rastafarian Jesus, but he's a solid artist.

He is good. I just think he deserves to be called a great singer/songwriter. Seriously, what was so intimate or cool about Marley's lyrics? They were basically just catchy.

Re: Bob Dylan Has Nothing On This Man...

I don't listen to music because other people think 'this or that' about the artists. 8] I think my favorite Marley song is Redemption song... Cash is <3 His cover of Hurt is chilling. And Dylan rawks. 8]
