As long as you've got no problem with horrendous stupidity in characters, you should enjoy it.

While I agree that most characters are stupid ('cept Oka >:3), I think given the majority of the situations it's sort of a realistic type of stupid. And I think that's always something to appreciate in a work of art. Realism in portraying the characters.

But yeah, Oku definitely does not portray humanity as a generally intelligent race, and rightfully so.

To me, Gantz is on the same level of stupidity as The Mist, when their solution for the big bugs being attracted to the lights in the store was "turn on more lights."

And while that is true, I don't think not being cautious is on the level of turning on more lights, when the main characters are yelling, "turn them off!" and you can blatantly see that the bugs are being attracted to said light.

Maybe I'm just too biased to properly evaluate it, I dunno. I'll probably make a thread later to evaluate more in-depth all of the stupid things in Gantz.

I just read the first 6 chapters of Gantz and the only thing in my head the whole time was "WTF?!"

...I must say, it is the most disturbing manga I have ever read.

LOL, you haven't seen shit yet. Wait until you get to chapter 80. That's were it gets good. Everything after chapter 250 is insane. Makes the first 6 chapters look like nothing.

^ yeah it is kind of messed up at times. When I first started reading gantz I had trouble following it too. I thought of it as a "fighting manga". When I realized it's really more like a drama/mystery it started making sense.

Here's what I think about the story, and what it's underlining themes are. I think it's better to find out on your own, but I'll put this here just in case. It doesn't contain significant spoilers but I'll put it in spoiler tag anyway.

My memory of Gantz isn't very fresh, so about all I can think of is For me, personally, if the last thing I remembered was dying, then I found myself in a room with a bunch of strangers (and possibly saw someone else teleported in), I would be incredibly cautious (ie, not see people die and be all "yeah, whatever.") Of course, my opinion may be biased because I think it would kick ass to be given guns and one of those suits and told "kill this thing," while the chance of a GLORIOUS DEATH on the BATTLEFIELD awaited me.

It's more about how the fighting/killing affects people and what they are willing to do to survive. It examines society in general and how people behave differently around strangers then they do around people they know. It also explores the dark parts of the human soul. At times some characters have to choose between their own well being and the others in their group. This brings up the notion of "how much is someone's life worth". To some it's priceless. To others it's worthless. Is someone you know worth more then someone you don't? Aside from the "Is one human more valuable then another." issue, there's the question of "Is a human life worth more then an alien?". The first 250 chapters revolve around this theme. From 250 onwards it becomes more of a mystery. They start to question what exactly gantz is, and what purpose it serves. The fights/hunts become secondary (although cool as hell). They begin to find out more about gantz and it's origins. __________________
