@ KNN: have you noticed you have been repeating the same 2 names when defending rapping? As good as J. Cole or Lupe Fiasco might be, a genre they do not make.

As I said, the overall (I guess you missed that word before) dissonance of rap doesn't charm me. No matter how good the lyrics are, they alone won't make a song, they need to work with the melody and there's where most rap falls flat: the melody has to be catchy but also frame the performer, which most of the times fails miserably, since the rapper will only respect the beat but not the whole of the melody (and there's where I doubt you that rappers would sing with a classical music melody, because the majority of classical music doesn't have a defined beat, it mutates throughout the melody, so the rapper would have to be constantly changing his beat to keep up, and that's where the rappers would sink).

But that's not all of it: the lack of instrumentality of the voice is a major put-off for me. I know, I know, rap isn't rap if you add instrumentality to the voice, but for me vocal music only works if you treat the voice as an instrument equal to the others. That's why all the other genres I like with vocals (cantus firmus, madrigal, indie, epic musical music, metal, etc) succeed where rap fails: even if the voice is being dissonant (on purpose) and/or you can't quite understand the lyrics at first, like in epic classical music and metal, the voice is being instrumental and melodic, and that I can appreciate.

We're talking rap now? Geez... if I wanted to listen to some guy talk fast, I'd go to an auction. Honestly, the general, like most music these days, seems to want to break down into the most simple, catchiest form, thus being able to identify with the highly distracted ADD masses. Rap and hip hop is just being filed into the Pop section of music. But again, that's pretty much all music.

As for those guys NN thinks can rap to classical music... please, Mozart needs no rapping.

Just because it was intentional doesn't make it valid.

Rap, at it's core, is an adaptation of poetry, with the rhythm defined by a musical beat rather than isolated intonation. It's perfectly possible to rap Shakespeare. Who, while we're on the topic, is the definition of an artist that appeals to the "highly distracted ADD masses". His works are saturated with crude innuendos and jokes in his work that appealed the lowest common denominator of Elizabethan audiences. Want to start calling him out too? That fucking sellout.

Unfortunately todays rappers are rapping about dick, hoes, gangs, clubbing and drugs. No matter how much adaptation of poetry rap is, if it talks about those stuff all the time, its pretty hard to defend it. Because the public will define music by its lyrics.

And listeners of rap dont care about lyrics. As long the beat is all right, they will dance all night.
