Doesn't this also mean that credit card machines, ATM's, etc...don't work either. Make's it kinda hard to get money out of the bank, amirite. Nice way to fuck up your economy. I wonder if people still got to pay the bills for using their cell phones and internet despite not being able to use the service. IT would be bullshit if they had too.

Of course this is sand people were talking about. It's not like this technological setback is that significant to them. It's the equivalent of downgrading their armies current trebuchets back to catapults. No big deal.

The Middle East and North Africa is erupting with social justice... interesting times ahead. Tunisia, Lebanon, Egypt and Yemen. How many more before the week is out?

Yeah, hopefully Nero is fighting the good fight, I know I would be battling injustice if I was there. Kinda wish I took him up on his offer to have me live with him as his personal grappling coach. He also said we could climb pyramids and watch movies/play videogames all night long...

Man he's weird. I've got a cool Egyptian statue mummy thing sitting on my desk thanks to him though. He's cool in my book.

Jon Stewart mentioned something the other night about people oversees using the social networks to organize protests and what have you. I wonder if they cut the webz in an attempt to halt the uprising that was mentioned to be brewing up.

Yeah, it's actually on real news programs, too.

Basically, groups are using twitter and facebook to organize mass rallies and riots. They are also using it to send messages, offer support between countries with similar problems, hence the concurrent upheavals in Tunisia, Lebanon and Yemen, and send handy tips for dealing with riot police/army. Like, don't wear contacts because tear gas will be trapped by them and sting all that more.

So, yeah - one hundred percent this is the Egyptian Government trying to lock down this movement and quell it before it spirals too large. However, I can't help think they didn't just make life long enemies by the young internet users in Egypt and perhaps other countries.

Also, I think the government has put the leader of the opposition under guard, too. Wonder how he is involved. Media is very slim at the moment, most of the footage is coming from Al Jazeera, but I'm watching with interest. Egypt was one of the more liberal Islamic countries... this doesn't bode well.

China is probably also taking notes on country wide internet shutdown.

I bank on China following suit sooner then later as well. They have already at points instituted state level censure ship, and shutdowns during that whole debacle with the major search engines.

Its also not far stretch of the imagination for the US government to gain the capability soon either(under the same guise mentioned above). Companies like Verizon are working hand in hand with the fed to bring all information tech into the merging cloud systems. A cloud controlled by them=/

*I have pretty much come to the conclusion that this internet blackout is less to quell civil unrest (though I believe that is a part of it), and more about blocking out going information to the rest of the world. Seems like a reasonable tactic. If the overlords can censure all independent outgoing sources of information. Then it is up to the less then neutral official news outlets. Who now thanks to said blackout can feed bits, and pieces of the real story. Simply filling in the gaps as seen fit.

Considering Mubarak's relationship with the US and other western countries. The pain staking lengths gone to keep him in office for 30 years. Compiled with all the economic, and military aid which subsequently starts shortly before he took the position. Along side the fact that our(US) most recent presidents all seem to be quoted showing nothing but adulation for the guy.... Yeah I am forced to think that this more then an attempt to deter some civil rights protesters.

Its sad that so many of our governments support this kind of tyranny. Luckily for the citizens of egypt their are those fighting on behave of their freedom. The same groups that were responsible on the denial of service attacks on paypal and the major creditcard companies during the more recent wikileaks incidents. Are working to provide internet access via foreign landlines, to pretty much anyone with the capability to remote dial out. So kudos to the guys at Telecomix and Anonymous for offering this service. Also for faxing instructions to all the schools, libraries, plus the various other civil community centers on how to accomplish it.

*- Seriously was inspired by the episode of DS9 I watched today. The one where sikso goes back in time and is forced to replace that civil rights leader. The government cuts internet access to keep the abused citizens from telling their side of the story.
