Some japanese words...
Hi, I've some questions about some japanese words...
In the anime, I always heard: kun, san, sama, chan, after their names. What is the meaning of all that(I know some of it, but just want to clarify). Also..yeah i know my forum name is Victormaru...but what exactly "maru" means? There are a lot of maru in japanese name: Sesshomaru, orochimaru, Kimimaru, Konohamaru etc.... Also, I heard a lot of japanese sentence ended with this.."dayo" or something like that...what is the meaning of that? |

San - To be formal, like Mr. or Mrs.
Sama - Signifying leadership or lord, like Lord Hokage Chan & Kun - Words for friend, Chan is for girl and Kun is for boys.... there's more to these two as well, but I'm not too sure. Maru - "boy" Dayo - No idea...

Like Gemikai said before,
san- Mr. Mrs, or Miss chan- used towards someone affectionate. kun- used for someone younger than you; also used with male friends sama- is used just like Mr, Mrs, or Miss, but it is much more formal, and is contains much more respect. This can also be used for God. ex: Iesu-sama (Jesus) maru- is commonly used for boys' names. Like, for Shikamaru. Instead of his name only being "Shika" which means deer, they add maru, so it turns into a name. -dayo. This is a term used just like desu, but in a more casual terms. You would not use dayo for instance, with your teacher or your boss at work.

Maru is also a common ending for samurai's names like Amidamaru from Shaman King and Bakunetsumaru from SD Gundam there is more, but I can't think of any right now. Chan can also work for boys, only when they are babies though.

Taken from "XXX Holic volume 4"
Honorifics San- The most common honorific, it is the same as "Mr. Mrs. Ms." etc. It is the all purpose honorific. Sama- Used to confer great respect. This is one level higher than "San" Dono- This comes from the word "tono" Which means "Lord". It is even higher than "Sama" and is used to confer the greatest of respect. Kun- used at the end of boys names to show familiarity or endearment. Also used by men, among friends and when addressing someone younger or of a lower station. Chan. Used to express endearment, mostly toward girl. It is also used with little boys, pets and even among lovers. It gives a sense of childish cuteness. Bozu- Informal way of talking to boys. It means "kid" or "squirt". Sempai- Used when referring to a superior, be it in school or work. Kohai- Opposite of "Sempai". It means inferior, or lower classman Sensei- Literally meaning "One who has come before". Usually used when talking to teachers. [Blank]: Usually left out on these lists, but perhaps the largest difference between the english language and Japanese language. A name without an honorific shows a very intimate relation ship. Usually only family members, spouses or close friends have the permission to address one in this manner. Known as yobisute, it can been gratifying when some one who has earned the permission to address some one this intimately does so, but when it is not earned it can be very insulting. Yep, that explains it all. |
