Re: 8.9 earthquake leads to Tsunami and fires in Japan

I think I've seen "Life after people" too... memory tells me that they were very similar and I was wondering if they were the same thing repackaged. I'd have to check.

Re: 8.9 earthquake leads to Tsunami and fires in Japan

I like those "what if" documentaries. My favorites being "The Future is Wild" and "Alien Planet". Life after People was good. I was watching the series pretty regularly when I was still living at home. Nice to know that with as much as we've fucked with the face of the planet, she'll take everything right back when we aren't here to continually fuck with it.

Re: 8.9 earthquake leads to Tsunami and fires in Japan

Life After People was a History Channel thing, so I imagine that they would have made their own thing, even if it wasn't an original idea. Also, it's apparently a series, with several episodes following the 2-hour premiere.

Edit: Population Zero was first aired a few months after Life After People, so it looks like a coincidence that both were in production around the same time.

Well, holy fuck. I thought it's more like a 10 meter wave swallowing everything it comes across, but it starts of as a stream, then becomes this huge goddamn river which is ripping houses from the ground. Scary how nature works.

Re: 8.9 earthquake leads to Tsunami and fires in Japan

Just read a report saying reactors 1 and 3 seem OK (3 also exploded), but reactor 2's rods are being exposed due to low water levels and may be melting.

However, also read this on why this meltdown won't be another Chernobyl. Interesting.

So it's because of the Chernobyl incident that this won't be another Chernobyl. Interesting.

I also watched those two documentaries and I was appreciative of the highlight that both had on the cephalopod's intelligence. Also, the Amoeba Sea must be one of the coolest and scariest concepts that I ever saw on documentaries.

Good to see Humanity learn from its mistakes instead of repeating them on cycles.

Hey! The human race is learning! All it takes are colossal mistakes... so, once we've learned the lessons from global climate change, it'll never happen again.

Well, cephalopods have shown problem solving skills in nature, so it's only logical for them to continue evolving this trait and gaining more intelligence (like how intelligence evolved with humans) as time moves forward.

That dart field was scary, too. All of those little ass things taking down one of those big creatures (I can't remember the names for the life of me).

I know of that, but it's rare to see cephalopods given their deserved credits on intelligence. Hell, it's even rare to see cephalopods in fiction (they were documentaries, but very fictitious) outside of giant squids and Lovercraftian stories.

Beach Quills (the darts) and Beach Lopers (the big ass things). Thank you Wikipedia!

That was impressive too, life creating projectiles for predatory purposes. We have similar things, like animals leaving poisonous darts on their predators, but it's not quite the same thing.

But the Amoeba Sea still takes the cake for me. It's a super bacterial colony that holds all liquid water within itself and eats anything that is within its reach (well except the Sea Striders, which would put the Chrysler Building into shame). Talk about never wanting to go to the beach.

So Venice's Acqua Alta getting higher and higher due to the rise of the sea level doesn't matter?

Who am I kidding, oil industries don't care for historical cities and gondoliers.

Or some people about some promises. *not-so-subtle wink*

Whether they do or not, oil wouldn't contribute so much to global pollution if the market didn't demand it.

Different documentary. The intelligent monkey squids were part of "The Future is Wild", which spanned from 5 million years to 200 million years into the future. The Amoeba sea was in "Alien Planet".
