Re: 9.0 earthquake leads to Tsunami and crazy fuckery in Japan
Ok so what the fuck can we do for the nuclear plant? NOTHING just hope the engineers prevent it.
What I want to say is why send money to Japan when Haiti is worse?

Re: 9.0 earthquake leads to Tsunami and crazy fuckery in Japan
Because the Japan situation is more pressing at the moment. Haiti had it's moment to fundraise and now Japan needs some help.

Japan's crisis is a little bit bigger than Haiti's. I'm sorry if you don't think an impending MELTDOWN isn't worth sending support to the nation for evacuation of the civilians and engineers to assist in repairing the leaking core in your mind. |

Whatever dude I'm just acknowledging the people of Haiti, something people seem to have forgotten. I understand a meltdown is worse but we can't do shit about it with money imo.

Re: 9.0 earthquake leads to Tsunami and crazy fuckery in Japan
Japan won't have a meltdown. That's just the media using fear mongering to boost their ratings.
Most experts I've seen say that worst case scenario it will be a little worse then 3 mile island. The main problem has been that the cooling system is offline because of the tsunami. They should have that fixed by this weekend if everything goes according to plan. It should take weeks or maybe months for the reactors to completely cool down, but we're already past the critical point. So no worries about the fuel rods melting, or any shit like that. They pumped seawater into the reactors as a emergency measure and had to vent the air a couple times. That's the main source of the radiation exposure they're talking about. We'll see if they get the water pumps back working. If so, there should be no further problems. These reactors will never be used again. Once they pumped the seawater into them, that contaminated them beyond use. So there goes billions of dollars in investment. I don't know if you guys are aware, but this isn't the only nuclear reactor having problems over there. I was reading somewhere, that several other reactors have had water shortages, and explosions. Edit: LOL @ people still feeling sorry for Haiti. They get hit by hurricanes almost every year, and for some reason decide to rebuilt their fucking huts right back where the last ones got destroyed. I don't feel sorry for their stupidity, no more then I feel sorry for the fucktards in New Orleans that decided it was a good idea to live below sea level. Some people deserve what they get...yeah, I said it.

Re: 9.0 earthquake leads to Tsunami and crazy fuckery in Japan
@AMA: Well, Haitians don't really have a choice. They're kind of poor.
@Manta: Japan needs more help at the moment. It's numbers. Haiti's 2011 population: 9,719,932; Japan's population (Take about 10,000-15,000 for deaths): 126,475,664

I sent money to Japan anyway when they began to announce it. Just in case 230,000 died in Haiti earthquake.

Re: 9.0 earthquake leads to Tsunami and crazy fuckery in Japan
Although AMA came as too harsh, he has a point: they're not being very bright by reconstructing their houses in a place that is target of many tropical storms.
Think about it: (arbitrary numbers alert) you have a village with 100 people that inhabit 20 houses, each house worth of 100 dollars when reconstructed. To relocate the village's habitants to another spot, you have to spend 5000 dollars on the whole ordeal Now what you think it's more worth: relocate once the village and spend 5000 dollars or reconstruct the village for 2000 bucks each time? It's fine if you only need 1 or 2 reconstructions, but more than that (which happens in Haiti and the fact they're hit every other year by an hurricane) is already losing money that could be better spent elsewhere. Yes, it's sad that Haiti has many struggles both economically and socially, but it's not like they can't do anything to help themselves. Also, the world isn't exactly egalitarian, so who do you think people will be more concerned, a country that has an heavy presence in global economy and science and has a slight risk of nuclear disaster or a country that has very little weight in the global panorama? |

That said, it is suspected that they will gain control this weekend. But THAT said, it is Japan. They are expected to produce results or die trying (in some cases), so I won't be surprised if it continues. As for Haiti, the real problem there was the people who convinced them to build everything out of concrete slabs. Whoops. As for forgetting, I am under the impression that relief work continues, but it is just the media's short attention span that has us carrying on. Perhaps your beef is with them. EDIT: Oh, and the supposed bot's posts read a bit like crude poetry. If he brushes them off a bit, it could be a very entertaining bot to have around.

Re: 9.0 earthquake leads to Tsunami and crazy fuckery in Japan
They should just leave the island, but they can't. Many of these villages were built before things like weather tracking were invented, so I'm not sure that argument is very fair. If the village had been founded in modern times, I'd agree.

Re: 9.0 earthquake leads to Tsunami and crazy fuckery in Japan
I don't know about other countries, but we here already relocated many historical villages and monuments, either because of water reservoirs or to take them back a few notches to avoid being swollen by sea via erosion of the coast. I know the budget of Haiti can't compare to an European country, but also the value of the constructions is much higher here than there.

Re: 9.0 earthquake leads to Tsunami and crazy fuckery in Japan
I'm afraid when one happens in my country it will be the same since 90% of construction is made of concrete and not built resistant to earthquakes or just badly constructed. Many buildings and houses will fall here and I think mine too.

Re: 9.0 earthquake leads to Tsunami and crazy fuckery in Japan
You seem to forget the most important thing in this world manta: Money. A quick rescue for Japan means a quicker stabilisation of the world's economy. Japan is the third biggest economical nation and biggest exporter of technology and highly developed ressources, for almost every big buisness (Apple, Siemens etc.) and of course the automobile industry. Toyota is the biggest conglomerate for automobiles (After this it will probably be Volkswagen..yeah for us -.-).
Haiti is the poorest country in the world. Sorry for speaking as an economist, but it really is not important. For Haiti, mostly humanitarian reasons applied, but Japan is much more valuable for the economy. The only "postitve" thing is, that the oil price could fall due to the fact that Japan in the world's third biggest importer of oil. And now this import will fall and so may the oil prices.
