I would like to believe he is dead, based on the chapter title but I will hold off on giving my answer, the title was Gaara dies then I will go with that.

I didn't really like him considering what he did to Lee. But something tells me he isn't dead because to many people like his demony ass.

Considering that he changed from the psychopath that he was and is generally know for, I liked him for the short while he was conscious in the second part of Naruto. He was more good natured. Not sure how other people will take that, but i like it much better.

I think that he is too popular to be killed off. And methinks that Sakura will be able to revive him. Merely a guess, but one that could make Sakura a bigger kickass character.

But if he does remain alive, what will happen to his abilities? It was very much dependant on the Shukaku, wasn't it? What will he do without it?

Well the bird only swallowed him. He didn't chomp him down.

I also don't think he is dead. I think that in the last chapter, I believe 264 but maybe 263, you saw him looking at himself and asking himself who he was looking at himself. I think he is going to fight to live.

Also with the bird thing, Naruto's going to end up getting swallowed by the bird. But on purpose. Just like in Men In Black 1, if you've seen it. He's going to get swallowed and then destroy the thing from the inside saving Gaara.

I believe that he's dead, but only for this moment. It could even be a state of death, just like Zabuza in the early episodes. I hope that he comes back, and I believe that he will come back. If he doesn't.......then, OH WELL! He's dead. But that's such a sad loss...
