This is Itachi's freaking eye deterioration lookup.

Again, just a theory, and some of an analysis. But this one is a little farther from the true outcome of the manga, so...
I accept the fact Itachi isn’t totally blind yet – his vision is just deteriorating. I’m going to point the possible effects of the Mangekyou on his eyes.

As we know, vision is composed of various elements, and its deterioration can be caused by countless symptoms, which if I listed would exceed the word limit >_>
But this is actually simpler than it seems, since Kakashi mentioned the main outcome of Itachi’s sight deterioration. The freaking Mangekyou Sharingan.

In my opinion, though, it’s not “only” the Mangekyou that deteriorates the vision. The abusive and constant use of the normal Sharingan still strains vision, but in a slower pattern. Mangekyou just extrapolates that deterioration.

Seeing Itachi got the Mangekyou when 13, and has been abusing it until now (He’s 20 at the current timeline)... We can say the effects are pretty drastic. I wouldn’t give much lifetime to his complete eyesight, if he continued that way.

Workings of Sharingan

In the Manga, we’ve seen quite some times how the Sharingan works in Sasuke’s vision.
It identifies the workings of Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and see the enemies’ movements in Taijutsu.
Now seeing into Sasuke’s view of the Genjutsu cast by the Rain Nins:

After that scene, Sasuke ran out of chakra, and hurt because of the Cursed Seal... he really said it was his last bit of chakra, but part of his fall may be because of overload.
For example:
Ever visited the spam thread to see some of the “mass quotes”, and suddenly your computer freezed?
Ever had 20 different programs open at the same time, and suddenly half of them crash at the same time dragging your computer after all? >_>

That’s what I want to point. Part of the eye deterioration may be not only of overuse, but overflow of information absorbed by it. Itachi, being in Akatsuki, may have faced even worse situations with the Sharingan. So let’s say Itachi overloads a lot.

Eye elements replacement

In a normal vision, you’re able to see things thanks to light. You can focus, and have a still fairly nice unfocused image, you identify colors... human vision differs from the many beings out there.

The Sharingan, though, adds new “elements”. The vision, then, has to become used with them as to work properly. That may be the cause of the “Sharingan” stages... for example, if a child gets a 3-tomoe Sharingan right away, his/her vision may have serious consequences later.

We see Chakra, we see the familiar aura in objects origined by Genjutsu, and we see the afterimages of a person’s movement. Those are “new” elements that add up to the vision, thus straining it a lot, and keeping it farther than the normal eyes’ activities.

About the third level

It’s supposed to finally see the “Afterimages”, and possibly the complete workigns of other Genjutsu to counter it. As two final elements, they add up to the “substitution” of the normal eye’s elements.

Afterimages:





Itachi keeps his Sharingan all day. So naturally, he makes use of the “Sharingan” elements more than his normal eye elements.
Thus, a part of the eye deterioration may be cause of the constant use of only certain vision elements. But that’s a small part.

Mangekyou Effects

So far, we haven’t seen Itachi’s point of vision with the Mangekyou activated, so part of this is speculation. But it is the main component of the possible “deterioration”.
According to Kakashi, the main element is the use of the techniques “Tsukiyomi” and “Amaterasu”.

In Tsukiyomi, Itachi manipulates a Genjutsu-world composed entirely inside his mind, with control over feelings, time and space. It looks black-and-white, inverted.

So maybe the mangekyou vision is black-and white inverted?
That’s just a possibility. But kinda adds to the “vision elements” theory, you see.

Back into topic, the Tsukiyomi’s victim experiences 72 unreal hours of torture. That’s supposed to cause strain on Itachi’s eyes, alright.
But what if Itachi’s conscience is in the Genjutsu, and he does experience the 72 hours of torture, poking knives at whoever it be / being present at a scene?

That would add to the eye a "mental strain". Eye deterioration facts have part of it’s bases on actual brain problems, and such.

About Amaterasu:

We’ve seen nothing so far, only the flames... do they actually come from the eyes? Lol. That would be a funny point to the deterioration thingy, but I think not, at least for now.

At last, we see Itachi deactivating his Sharingan after he used Tsukiyomi 2 times and Amaterasu in one day. As it seeps LOTS of chakra, the chakra pathways to the "eyes" MAY be damaged, and the absurd quantity of chakra can damage brain cells / eyes. That's the last point for now...

So that’s it. I tried a “near-scientific-based” lookup of the problem. Though I only looked up on one url to study part of the human vision, that’s pure theory.
