Toys-to-life games, games that have both a digital and physical components, had quite a moment earlier in the decade. After the closure of the studio that made Disney Infinity a couple of years ago, the sub-genre has largely been on ice. Until now, that is! Ubisoft Toronto, the studio that brought us Far Cry 4 and Far Cry Primal, looks to shoot the genre in the arm with a heaping helping of… Star Fox?
Starlink: Battle for Atlas is the new sci-fi adventure when players kit out their own personal space crafts and dogfight through the solar system to push back the oppressive Forgotten Legion. When not shooting your way through bad guys, the game assumes a more exploratory tone. You can adventure across planets, discovering treasure and lost landmarks. You can also get in the trading business, transporting cargo from point to point for a profit. When your done with that, there’s always more things to shoot, of course.
The interesting thing about your ship is that it’s fully responsive to the customization of the physical piece that comes with it. This includes pilot figurines, which you’ll place on the dock that you attach to your controller. Different pilots have different unique abilities, so having a variety is key. From there, you build your ship around them — chassis, wings, weapons, etc. all have in-game equivalents that update as you snap them on.
This is where Star Fox comes in. On the Switch version, you’ll be able to collect figures and pieces produced in conjunction with Nintendo. It’s not a new Star Fox game, but its close enough.
