The X-Files revival draws to a close, we’ve got major Marvel Netflix news, Fuller House starts streaming, Zelda hits the big 3-0, and a VR headset announcement that will break the bank…

Here’s “The Week in Fandom” for February 26, 2016:

All the Marvel Netflix Hype

A second trailer for Marvel’s Daredevil season 2 dropped this week. While the first trailer was all about the Punisher, this one gives us an extended look at Elektra and how she’ll shake up Matt Murdock’s world in the upcoming season. Is she going to be our connection to the imprisoned Wilson Fisk? We’ll know when Daredevil season 2 hits Netflix on March 18.

As if that wasn’t enough good stuff, Marvel made more waves with their anticipated Iron Fist casting announcement: Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones has been picked for the title role.

While Marvel’s Daredevil and Jessica Jones were big hits, Jones’ casting comes after months of speculation about whether or not Marvel was cooling on the prospect of their announced Iron Fist series.

Zelda 30th Anniversary

Thirty years ago this week, The Legend of Zelda debuted on Nintendo’s Famicom console in Japan. Its sprawling, nonlinear world enthralled gamers by demonstrating just how immersive video games could be when unburdened by the constraints of quarter-hungry arcades.

The Legend of Zelda was a hit for Nintendo, becoming the first NES title to sell over 1 million copies (with 6.5 million eventually sold overall). It’s spawned innumerable sequels and spinoffs in the intervening 30 years, many of them classics in their own right — including The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask.

Fuller House Starts Streaming

Fuller-House-cast

Fuller House, the Netflix revival of Full House (duh!), began streaming on Friday. And while TV pundits have taken shots at the series, the show’s self-aware cheesiness seems to have immunized it from criticism, with fans of the original spreading the love all over social media.

The show’s beloved characters reunite in a gender-flip of the original series. D.J. Tanner-Fuller (get it?) is a widowed mother of three. And when things get too hectic, she turns to her sister Stephanie and best friend Kimmy for help.

The X-Files Cliffhanger Ending

The X-Files miniseries drew to a close on Sunday, leaving some fans begging for more and others scratching their heads. After retooling much of the show’s long-established mythology (and pausing the drama to provide some solid laughs), the series ended with a cliffhanger finale.

SPOILERS: So, what exactly was the truth? It seems that the mysterious trappings of the original series — black oil, alien bounty hunters, the threat of alien colonization, etc. — were all just part of a smokescreen designed to conceal the plans of Cigarette Smoking Man and his cohorts to depopulate and take over the world. Now, with Mulder and everyone else without alien DNA sick and dying, Scully is the only hope for the human race. Unless that’s William in the spaceship.

HTC Vive Price Shocker

htcvive

HTC’s high-end virtual reality headset is dropping later this year alongside notable competitors Oculus Rift, and PlayStation VR. The Vive pricing was announced earlier this week, and it’s a shocker. The HTC Vive will set you back $800 — $200 more than Oculus Rift.

If that seems expensive, it’s because it is. But it’s worth noting that the VIVE is sold as a bundle that includes two wireless controllers. It also comes with base stations that allow you to move around your room in-game. But for God’s sake don’t fall and break the headset or you’ll be out 800 bucks.
