Coming September 21st to Xbox One and PS4 is a “from-the-ground-up” remake of Spyro the Dragon and its sequels. We got hands-on with the reconstruction, and you can watch gameplay in the above video.

It’s the same game, but the controls, score, and even voice acting have been redone here. You may recognise the voice of Spyro as Tom Kenny, who lends his vocal magic to Spongebob Squarepants. He’s been back in the recording booth to help give the game that remastered feel.

We imagine he was a little hoarse after recording all the lines from Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon.

Compare the graphics above with that of the old Spyro:

We've come a long way, little dragon.

It’s a far cry from, say, the Dark Souls remaster that we recently got, which only bothered to upgrade about half of the textures. The new Spyro Reignited Trilogy actually looks quite beautiful, with all those swaying greens in the Artisans Homeworld.

The controls are the other aspect that’ll be changed quite a bit, as rotating the camera around will be a lot easier this time than pressing the L1/R1 buttons. Design director Toby Schadt said on the PlayStation Blog that the speeds, accelerations, and level geometry will be as faithfully recreated as possible, so as not to lose the magic.

It’ll still always be a bit different when using a new engine, but hopefully, Toys for Bob can trace over the original lines well enough. Have a look at the above gameplay and see if it lives up to your fond, childhood Spyro memories.

While it seemed like a no-brainer to bring this one to Switch, it looks like we’ll have to wait for a port. The hardware can handle it and the audience is right, but we guess it’ll take a bit more development time.
