What is the story behind Handsome Jack's mask?

At the end of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Jack is facing the Vault icon he was looking for. Lilith suddendly phasewalks in and punches the icon into Jack's face, that gets burned and deeply marked by a vault-shaped scar. In order to hide this scar, Handsome Jack wears a mask in Borderlands 2. The mask is designed to move synchronously with Jack's speech and facial expressions.
