What is Minionese? Its the fictional language spoken by the cute little yellow Minion critters in the Despicable Me animated franchise. It sounds like gibberish  and it is to a large extent but its also a living, breathing language. Kind of. One that director and voice actor Pierre Coffin made up as he went along. Its a mixture of various languages including French, Spanish, English and more  with a large dose of nonsense added in.Its very difficult to master though, as Steve Carell who plays villain-turned-good-guy Gru in the series and who had to speak Minionese in the latest instalment, attests.One of our directors does most of the minion voices and I had to actually do a little bit of Minionese in this movie and its really hard. Its a very specific language. I wasnt very good at it.FANDOM put Carell and his co-star Kristen Wiig, who plays Grus wife Lucy in the film, through their paces with a movie quiz  in Minionese.The challenge? If you've ever longed for a grown-up version of Honey I Shrunk the Kids, you're in luck, as the first trailer has dropped for a movie in which Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig do just that.Co-written and directed by Alexander Payne - whose previous credits include Election, Sideways and The Descendents - and co-starring Christoph Waltz and Jason Sudeikis, Downsizing is a high-concept comedy with the following synopsis...Downsizing imagines what might happen if, as a solution to over-population, Norwegian scientists discover how to shrink humans to 5 inches (13 cm) tall and propose a 200-year global transition from big to small. People soon realize how much further money goes in a miniaturized world, and with the promise of a better life, everyman Paul Safranek (Matt Damon) and wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to abandon their stressed lives in Omaha in order to get small and move to a new downsized community  a choice that triggers life-changing adventures.The movie recently opened the Venice Film Festival last week, and early word has been good, with The Guardian calling it "a gorgeous, giddy parable of a modern-day Lilliput" and Variety referring to it as "a ticklish and resonant crowd-pleaser for grown-ups."Downsizing hits U.S. screens on December 22, but FANDOM will be seeing the film before then at Fantastic Fest, so look out for our review coming very soon.
