NYCC: 'Voltron' Creators Tease Season 2

Its one thing to say youre playing a Power Ranger in the big screen reboot. Its another to actually take that to heart, embracing some of the heroics and physicality that comes with the role.I think we were pretty fortunate, explains Dacre Montgomery (the Red Ranger). I personally got to do a fair amount of my own stunts, at least on main unit. From the first night that we shot, there was a whole big car thing that I wont elaborate on. But it was incredible how much fun we got to have and how much lenience there was, obviously with a lot of safety and guidance.And its not just Montgomery who displays a note of X-Games intensity; the entire cast lights up when given the opportunity to elaborate on their favorite stunt.One of my favorite scenes that involved stunts was, we basically just had to run off a cliff, says Naomi Scott (the Pink Ranger). And for me that was so much fun because, obviously, we were harnessed up, but you dont see that. So in your mind what you see is, Im just running off a cliff! I think for me it was the closest to feeling like I was flying.And for that stunt, we actually broke a record, adds Ludi Lin (the Black Ranger). That cliff was like 40 meters across and we broke a record for that jump.

Feeling Like a Power Ranger

With big budget superhero films, audiences have become accustomed to CG spectacle. And by the looks of it, Sabans Power Rangers is no exception. But the films young cast is quick to defend the production, noting more practical effects were employed than moviegoers might think."The spaceship: They built the whole thing in one piece, says Dacre Montgomery (the Red Ranger). Its like eight city blocks [long]. And the perimeter is green screen. I think that is relatable to the whole film. The perimeter is green screen and thats where youll be seeing the CG.OK, but what about all those massive kaiju (a Japanese word for giant monsters) battles in the film?"Even with something like the Zord, youre looking at a 50-foot flight simulator, hydraulic system, explains Montgomery. The [visuals of the] Zord is obviously going to encapsulate around that, but were sitting in a cockpit flying around. It is real. Theres so much in this film of an epic proportion that were actually allowed to have that 80-percent its real feeling.Of course, it helps to be looped into the look and feel of the film from the get-go to really drive home that believability."What was left to our imagination, the special effects team made us very knowledgeable on what it was going to look like, says Becky G. (the Yellow Ranger). So even before we got into the pod to do our Zord scenes, we had an idea of what that was going to look like. And where everybody else was in the scene. So we actually knew what the scene was play by play, and we knew what it was going to look like.

Visual Effects and the Power Rangers

Sure, weve seen our heroes served up as dark and brooding (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice). Weve also seen them self-deprecating (Iron Man) and dysfunctional (The Avengers). But to compare our super-powered saviors to a crew of detention bound misfits (no matter how timeless that movie may be), well thats just crazy talk! Its ultimately a coming of age story like The Breakfast Club, says Dacre Montgomery, who plays Jason the Red Ranger in the upcoming Sabans Power Rangers. Five kids that meet, they dont initially like each other and then they form a bond a relationship. And the Power Rangers thing is almost like a metaphor, I guess, for the whole journey that we go on. A metaphor thats relatable to audiences of all ages, the cast  and studio  is banking on. I think its what attracts old fans to the series and new fans, too, notes Ludi Lin, a.k.a. Zack the Black Ranger. Its to awaken that inner kid inside of you. Everybody wants to be a hero. Everybody wants to be good. Its that ageless theme.

Power Rangers Meet The Breakfast Club

Breathing new life into a popular, nostalgia-filled childrens franchise isnt easy. But the actors who comprise the titular superheroes of Sabans Power Rangers  Naomi Scott, Becky G., Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler and Ludi Lin  embrace the high school aged characters as if they were truly walking in their shoes. Im Billy and I play RJ, flubs Cyler as hes introducing himself and the character he plays. I mean Im RJ and I play Billy. Sometimes! snorts Scott with a laugh. Sometimes they actually do cross into each other, adds Becky G. That familial camaraderie exudes from all five actors, making it easy for lines to blur between fact and fiction. Case in point: I play Trini, the yellow Power Ranger, explains Becky G. I think whats really cool about her is that she is independent due to her circumstances. She kind of found no point in making friends ever because shes constantly moving schools. And then, finally, shes forced to be friends with people. And the evolution of those friendships turns into really genuine relationships in the crazy adventure that we all go into together. This sentiment is clearly reflected by all five actors during the course of the interview  real-life strangers who became close friends during the shooting of the film.
