The Call of Duty series returns to its roots this November with Call of Duty: WWII, which marks the first time in almost a decade since the series visited the historic conflict. If you're thinking of jumping back into the series with Call of Duty: WWII, here's everything you need to know.

A Mode for Every Mood

On the multiplayer side, classics such as “Team Deathmatch” and “Domination” make their return to Call of Duty: WWII. However, it's the new “War” mode that has fans buzzing. War is a new narratively driven multiplayer experience that allows players to relive famous WWII battles. As either the Axis or Allies, players are tasked with attacking or defending objectives. The popular “payload” mechanic is even introduced during some stages of “War” maps. It’s definitely the most unique multiplayer mode in Call of Duty: WWII.

No More “Create-A-Class”

Also new to multiplayer is the addition of “Divisions.” Before entering your first match, you’ll be prompted to join a division. You’ll have five options to choose from, and experience earned in matches will allow you to unlock other classes down the line. Each class is assigned a loose difficulty suggestion, meaning the Infantry has the easiest loadout kit to master whereas the “Mountain” division is geared toward more experienced FPS veterans.

Hone Your Craft at the “Headquarters”

Another can’t-miss feature is the addition of the “Headquarters” social experience. Similar to the social spaces of fellow Activision shooter Destiny, Headquarters will hold about 50 players at a time and offers a variety of player activities in the downtime between matches. You'll be able to test out new weapons, challenge others to 1v1 duels, and more.

Realism Returns

Call of Duty has also shaken up the single-player experience in World War II.

There is a renewed emphasis on realism, with no health regeneration and no ammo drops. Instead, first aid and ammo will be supplied by squad members. Players can also earn experience points by dragging their allies into cover, capture enemy soldiers, and -- of course -- killing enemies. Earning XP will allow you to upgrade your character as you progress through the story.

Zombies Are Back

Finally, it wouldn't be a Call of Duty game if there wasn't a zombies mode. This time around, the biggest change is the addition of a class system that includes offense, control, medic, and support. On the complete opposite spectrum of realism, the “Zombies” game mode returns as robust as ever. Each class a certain role to fill and different abilities, making a balanced team essential to pushing back the waves of undead.

Rather than the traditional Create a Class feature, Call of Duty: WWII will have a new system called Divisions. It changes how players invest in their Call of Duty: WWII multiplayer character, with the choice of five divisions each with their own specialised training and weapons skills. The new War Mode will see players working as a team to fight for control of multiple strategic objects, not too dissimilar to the Operations mode in Battlefield 1.  The Call of Duty: WWII beta starts on August 25 on PS4 with the release date set for November 3 on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

The competitive multiplayer modes of Call of Duty: WWII may feature weaponry from 70 years ago, but the moment-to-moment action is no less frantic than previous entries in the series. To make sure you come out on top of the leaderboards, follow these tips.

Study the Classes

Before your first multiplayer game in Call of Duty: WWII, you’ll be asked to select which division to join. Divisions determine which weapon loadout and abilities you’ll start with. The most newbie-friendly division is Infantry, where players will be equipped with a bayoneted assault rifle. The most difficult division is the Mountain Division, which is all about long-range combat.

You can always unlock another division after you gain some experience under your belt. Don’t fret about your initial decision, but make sure it’s something you think you’ll enjoy playing for your first dip into the game.

Stay Aware

The best way to play Call of Duty: WWII is with a paranoid mindset. Spawns may not be safe, and where you were three seconds ago might now be occupied by the enemy. Always be aware of your surroundings and use your audio to listen for footsteps or gunfire locations. It’s best to always be on the move, watching your “six” often for anybody hoping to pick you off.

Reload With Caution

After you’ve put down an enemy player, you probably have a habit of reloading your magazine. It makes sense, right? You want a full clip for the next engagement, but more often than not, the enemy you just dispatched will have an ally nearby looking to see who killed their friend. Listen for nearby footsteps or shots to discern if it’s safe to reload.

Scavenge Freely

You’re bound to walk over the fallen corpses of your fallen comrades or enemy. Their weapons will be available for you to pick up and use at your disposal. This a great feature for times when you’re out of ammo, in a bind or need a different weapon type for an advantage. Once you die, you’ll respawn with your original loadout so don’t worry about being stuck with the same weapon after swapping out your original.

Memorize the Maps

Last but not least, learn the maps like the back of your hand! Honestly, this is one of the easiest and most beneficial things you can do in a game like Call of Duty: WWII. Finding the high-traffic areas, sneaky flank sections and spawn areas will greatly increase your game IQ and KDR. While this will initially take some time, it’s easy to learn as it’s something that will happen on a subconscious level. Do your best to take mental notes and you’ll be a step ahead of others in no time.
