The Book of Henry is in cinemas worldwide right now, and it's fair to say that the film has taken a battering from the critics, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 24%.The film tells the tale of a mother trying to rescue an abused girl with the help of a book written by her genius, and its mix of genres and abrupt tonal shifts seemed to genuinely annoy some film journalists, with Trevorrow bearing the brunt of their criticism.We therefore asked the director how the negative reception has affected him..."Professionally all I can hope is that people will go see the movie and judge the movie for themselves. I think personally of course its something I put a tremendous amount of my heart and my soul into as did everybody who made the film."Its something that I hope would be able to reach people who write about films for a living in the same way that it reaches audiences. I know the way it affects audiences and the way it connects with them and so that is hugely satisfying to me. Obviously I wish that I could have it all, but what can you do?"We then asked Trevorrow if he feels like he's under extra scrutiny having made global smash Jurassic World before Book of Henry, and then moving onto Star Wars: Episode IX after..."I think that making a film like this, that is a risky film  from a place of tone, from a place of character, from a place of narrative  I think that putting that in the context of the other films that I make may not necessarily be helpful to it, and so I apologise to this film if in any way I have tainted the way people look at it because of everything else that I am associated with."I think that its very much part of my personality and the way that I was raised in that I was raised in a very creative family  my mother was a photographer, my father was in a country rock band, and they both encouraged me to be not just a creative person, but to face my fears and to challenge myself and look over into the abyss of what scares me most and then jump. I did that here and so for better or worse I cant apologise for wanting to do something different and new, I feel like the audience demands it."The Book of Henry is in cinemas now.

Who is Colin Forester?

You want excitement? You want fun? You want one of the best damn movies youll see this year? Then you need to get behind the wheel, drive to the nearest theater and see Baby Driver. The story isnt complicated: a getaway driver named Baby lives in his own world, one that has a constant soundtrack. Baby meets a girl, tries to do one last job to leave his life of crime, but like most one last jobs, it doesnt quite work out. Its a simple tale told with masterful moviemaking magic and fresh, frenetic flavor from writer/director Edgar Wright. Wright has taken everything he learned from Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and The Worlds End and elevated it all into something incredible. Baby Driver is an idea hes had gestating for over twenty years, and you can see every carefully crafted inch of the film reflects his passion, tenacity, and well, drive in making this a modern genre mashup between music video, gangster film, action movie, and fairy tale. That sounds like a mishmosh but trust me, it all gels together into something unbelievably special. Wright has always had a talent for blending music and the moving picture, but hes elevated it into something completely new with Baby Driver. The movie never ceases to have a rhythm and a beat to it. You could spend the entire running time tapping your toes along to the insanely energetic soundtrack. Seriously, this album is going to be this years Awesome Mix. Vol. 1. But its not only the music that makes Baby Driver such a delight. Youve got a cast that is having the time of their lives. Ansel Elgort is a triumph as Baby. You might notice that he has a Han Solo-esque jacket on during the movie, and I kind of wish he was playing the legendary smuggler in the new Han Solo film. Hes that good. Lily James is equally captivating as Debora, and the two have such great chemistry that it would make Walter White smile. The rest of the cast is rounded out by dependable character actors; Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Jon Bernthal, and Elza Gonzalez make up the kind of iconic gangster squad that makes this class of movie shine. And to top it all off, the movie doesnt skimp on the script. This is a tightly told contemporary fable thats as classic as it is innovative. Wright injects humor and pathos in all the right doses so that this doesnt become a style-over-substance glitter piece. Every character is fully formed and gets their moment in the sun. The emotional payoffs are a knockout across the board and will have you invested and engaged at every twist and turn. Youll be shocked, tense, excited, and overjoyed by the time the house lights come up. Its a rollercoaster ride thats going at lightspeed. Baby Driver gets a 5 out of 5. Id give it a 5000 out of 5 if theyd let me. (They wont). It is everything you want from a night at the movies. Fast-paced story, heart-pounding action, swoonworthy romance, colorful characters, laughs, gasps, tears and triumph. Baby Driver is this years Mad Max: Fury Road: a game-changer of unfettered style that will go on to inspire future filmmakers to create cinema. Undoubtedly, Baby Driver is the best film of 2017. It will take a gargantuan achievement to knock it from that spot. As of now, 2017 has found its cinematic champion.

The Beguiled tells the story of a wounded Union officer who is found and nursed to health by the students and teachers of a Virginian girls school. As his stay becomes more prolonged, tensions rise in the household. Before long, love, lust, and horror take hold. Writer/director Sofia Coppola has adapted both the novel by Thomas Cullinan and director Don Siegels 1971 film into something that feels classic yet fresh. The film looks absolutely gorgeous in an old-fashioned way, but it has enough of a modern eye to it that it doesnt feel stuffy or outdated. So much of that is bolstered by an incredibly tense story about desire, manipulation, and femininity. The entire cast is firing on all cylinders, making every single scene sizzle with either sly humor, subtle sexiness, or nail-biting suspense. This is a superbly acted film, with every single performer at the top of their game. If Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, or Colin Farrell dont nab Oscar nominations, it will be an outright crime. To be fair, The Beguiled is a leisurely paced film. It takes its time getting you into this war-torn world and making you see life through the eyes of its many female characters. In this way, it would almost make for a dark double feature with Wonder Woman! Its also worth noting that Colin Farrells character is a delightful deconstruction of the modern nice guy persona that many people know is a sham. Hes just a fedora away from being a stereotype, but the movie is examining what kind of person is actually like that, and the hidden anger and masculine horror they withhold. This is going to be one that divides people for sure. Its got that stageplay feeling that many viewers might find too slow or unexciting. Those people would be missing all the tiny bits of humor from the younger actresses, the expert performances from the seasoned actors who can tell you exactly what theyre thinking with the simplest of looks, and the undeniably steamy atmosphere of the entire film. The Beguiled gets a 5 out of 5. Its a triumph in every way. Beautiful to gaze at, darkly funny, nerve-wracking, and with actors putting in some of the best work of their career, The Beguiled is a serious contender for the best film of the year. Dont miss it.
