Fandom's Games Team of Henry Gilbert and Bob Mackey got a chance to play the just revealed game in New York City this week and had such a great time with the off the wall game. Happy New Year. and welcome back to your Week in Fandom for January 13th, 2017.As you surely know by now, the world of fandom collectively mourned the passing of Carrie Fisher while we were away. Fishers death has been followed by an outpouring of love from friends, peers like Mark Hamill, and the world of fandom at large. Memorials include a fan-made star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a petition at Change.org to make Leia an official Disney princess, tons of fan art, and a tribute at the Golden Globes celebrating Fishers career alongside that of her mother, Debbie Reynolds, who passed away a day after her daughter. Now, we know that Fisher did complete filming her parts for Star Wars Episode 8, including a reunion with her Jedi brother Luke, but its unclear how Fishers passing will affect the ongoing Star Wars saga. Certainly she will be missed but never forgotten.The rest of the Golden Globes ceremony was full of musical numbers, like this one promising Barb from Stranger Things is alive (shes totally dead), big victories for La La Land and Atlanta, and a ton of WTF moments. But perhaps my favorite was the sudden smootch between Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield. Thats right, folks: We got Deadpool kissing Spider-Man! If you look at the video, it seems like its Reynolds who goes in first -- not surprising, since he has said hed like to explore more of Deadpools pansexual side in the movies. But dont get your hopes up for a live-action Spidey/Deadpool bromance. The rights alone would be hell, and Garfield has already passed the red and blue jammies down to Tom Holland. Maybe this means the ongoing Cable casting call is about to get a whole lot sexier?Now whats with all the back and forth on Ben Afflecks solo Batman movie? First hes doing it, then its maybe, then only if the script is good. Meanwhile, hes releasing story details and hiring Joe Manginello as the villain (giving whole new meaning to Death Stroke). So what's going on? We know Warner Bros. is having a tough time whipping up the excitement for Justice League following the meme-worthy-in-all-the-wrong-ways Batman v Superman. I mean, have (yawn) scuse me, have you (yawn) -- have you seen the new still? Or is that the old one? I cant tell anymore! I mean come on, seen it, seen it, meh, seen it (unfortunately) and you get a pass, Aquaman. If anyone deserves it, its you buddy. Isnt someone missing? That bright center of hope? This looks like a job for Superman! But hes dead, so we get grumpy Ben instead. I get it Ben, its Daredevil all over again. Youre forgiven; that wasn't your fault... But this could be... I mean cmon, if the guy making the movie can't get excited about it, how are we supposed to? [BEAT] Alright, alright! Take your Bat-time Speaking of things no one is excited about: Deadpool co-creator and illustrator of many pouches Rob Lyfeld recently signed a deal to bring the '90s back -- to the EXTREME -- with a new cinematic universe of movies based on his line of comics, like Bloodstrike! Kaboom! And uh, Blood...wulf! Ugh, do we really need another cinematic universe? I mean, if Warner Bros. cant get the Justice League to work, how the hell is anyone supposed to make Re:Gex? Im all for the '90s coming back if were talking flannel and Nirvana, but cmon Rob: I need hands and feet! But the Extreme cinematic universe is coming whether we asked for it or not, and according to Rob, that '90s audience is out there somewhere poised and ready to strike Finally: The big news in games this week comes from Nintendo! First there was their late night live stream chock full of details about their new console, the Switch, and today with an unveiling event for press in New York. The extended version of the trailer adds a couple more F-bombs to really take advantage of that R-rating... and check the meta cameo of those X-Men comics - maybe some Deadpool influence showing? In any case, this is shaping up to be the Wolverine movie weve always wanted - so check it out when it finally pops its claws on March 3rd.Now, over the weekend, Nintendo finally and officially unveiled the new Nintendo Switch with a lengthy livestream and an exclusive press event with alllll the details on the upcoming console (fingers crossed!) to put Nintendo back on top. Fandoms full of coverage from the event and its safe to say the news is preeeeetty exciting.But how excited should we be? After all, weve seen Nintendo screw the pooch on a major console release before *cough* Wii U *cough*. Lets see: releasing new hardware that is graphically inferior to current-gen competitors? Check! Only 10 games have official release dates before spring and I couldnt pick most of them out of a lineup! And finally limited availability Check.Now, Nintendo of America President and human Pokemon Reggie Fils-Aime chalks up the underperformance of the Wii U to a failure to commuuuuunicate its potential to fans along with a lack of compelling titles. He also vows to correct these issues and, uh Switch things up with the new console. For 300 bucks, Ill give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt ONE MORE TIME! For old times sake. But after that, No. Continues! And more game news: mysterious billionaire and President of Valve Corporation Gabe Newell broke his trademark silence for another AMA on Reddit this week. As usual, missing were ANY revelations regarding the long-awaited (and rumored CANCELED) Half-Life 3, although Newell did hint at a new game in the same universe, as well as citing Portal 2 as his favorite of Valves single player games. And when asked about the Half-Life and/or Portal movies being developed by JJ Abrams, Newell says theyre coming Even though JJ seemingly swore off sequels, adaptations and reboots last week in order to focus on original ideas. (psst, JJ - Bryan Cranston for Gordon Freeman!)Speaking of Heisenberg - check out his giant floating head from this new Power Rangers trailer. You might think its weird to have Walter White in a Power Rangers movie - until you realize he was voicing bad guys Twinman and Snizard on the show all the way back in 93. And now for a-NOTHER adaptation, a reboot AND a sequel all combined into one like so many Lions forming Voltron Legendary Defender Season 2. The awesome Netflix cartoon returns today and is already available to stream in its entirety. This season sees the Paladins reunite only to be chased across the galaxy by big bad Emperor ZarkonTheres also Split opening this weekend, in which actual psycho James McAvoy plays Kevin, a man with 23 distinct identities - some of which have some pretty serial killer-y tendencies.
