The Call of Duty series returns to its roots this November with Call of Duty: WWII, which marks the first time in almost a decade since the series visited the historic conflict. If you're thinking of jumping back into the series with Call of Duty: WWII, here's everything you need to know.

A Mode for Every Mood

On the multiplayer side, classics such as “Team Deathmatch” and “Domination” make their return to Call of Duty: WWII. However, it's the new “War” mode that has fans buzzing. War is a new narratively driven multiplayer experience that allows players to relive famous WWII battles. As either the Axis or Allies, players are tasked with attacking or defending objectives. The popular “payload” mechanic is even introduced during some stages of “War” maps. It’s definitely the most unique multiplayer mode in Call of Duty: WWII.

No More “Create-A-Class”

Also new to multiplayer is the addition of “Divisions.” Before entering your first match, you’ll be prompted to join a division. You’ll have five options to choose from, and experience earned in matches will allow you to unlock other classes down the line. Each class is assigned a loose difficulty suggestion, meaning the Infantry has the easiest loadout kit to master whereas the “Mountain” division is geared toward more experienced FPS veterans.

Hone Your Craft at the “Headquarters”

Another can’t-miss feature is the addition of the “Headquarters” social experience. Similar to the social spaces of fellow Activision shooter Destiny, Headquarters will hold about 50 players at a time and offers a variety of player activities in the downtime between matches. You'll be able to test out new weapons, challenge others to 1v1 duels, and more.

Realism Returns

Call of Duty has also shaken up the single-player experience in World War II.

There is a renewed emphasis on realism, with no health regeneration and no ammo drops. Instead, first aid and ammo will be supplied by squad members. Players can also earn experience points by dragging their allies into cover, capture enemy soldiers, and -- of course -- killing enemies. Earning XP will allow you to upgrade your character as you progress through the story.

Zombies Are Back

Finally, it wouldn't be a Call of Duty game if there wasn't a zombies mode. This time around, the biggest change is the addition of a class system that includes offense, control, medic, and support. On the complete opposite spectrum of realism, the “Zombies” game mode returns as robust as ever. Each class a certain role to fill and different abilities, making a balanced team essential to pushing back the waves of undead.

Rather than the traditional Create a Class feature, Call of Duty: WWII will have a new system called Divisions. It changes how players invest in their Call of Duty: WWII multiplayer character, with the choice of five divisions each with their own specialised training and weapons skills. The new War Mode will see players working as a team to fight for control of multiple strategic objects, not too dissimilar to the Operations mode in Battlefield 1.  The Call of Duty: WWII beta starts on August 25 on PS4 with the release date set for November 3 on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Call of Duty: WWII is aiming to be a historically accurate game that deals with the horrors of World War II with sensitivity. But because of that, fans are up in arms about the removal of Nazi iconography, including swastikas from the game.  Most are claiming political correctness gone mad, but with such emblems banned in several countries, it's more about respecting boundaries, those that lost family members in the War and make sure the game isn't distasteful  after all, it's an FPS video game. But speaking to Michael Condrey, Studio Head at developer Sledgehammer Games, he confirmed to FANDOM that the team aren't totally removing such iconography for the game. According to Condrey, you will see such emblems in the single-player campaign, just not in the multiplayer.
