Ever wonder what life was like when mankind was still in the early stages of its evolution? Now you can experience it first-hand in Erectus The Game, a browser game set 130,000 years in the past. Gamepedia and its developer Maata Games are pleased to announce the Official Erectus Wiki. This weekend only, Gamepedia is giving away 2,500 Closed Beta keys on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Erectus plays out against the backdrop of an alternate version of our very own planet. Homo erectus and Homo sapiens are locked in a conflict that will decide which species lays claim to the land — and it’s up to the player to make sure that the latter comes out on top.

To that end, you’ll be able to choose from a selection of Homo sapiens tribes, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. The object of the game is to turn your small clan into the dominant civilization, but you’re not the only faction looking to do so.

Whether it’s an attack from another human player with their own band of Homo sapiens, to the constant threat of an assault from the computer-controlled Homo erectus, there’s scarcely a time when it’s safe to let your defences down. The key to success is balancing your focus on fortification with investments into the continued growth and spread of your attempt at civilization.

This is a complex game of strategy that’s sure to test the wits of even the biggest fans of the genre — but it’s also a taut multiplayer experience, that’s at its best when your friends are in control of the other factions vying to survive and flourish.
