We’re all feeling our share of longing for the golden era of console RPGs, and Battle Chasers: Nightwar is just the thing to tickle your nostalgia centers while offering something new. The game draws from the likes of Chrono Trigger, Suikoden, and Phantasy Star for its gameplay while offering a half-tech, half-fantasy world of comic book steam and sorcery.

Classic turn-based combat builds on the JRPG format alongside randomly generated dungeons to beef up the replay value. You’ll select from a half-dozen heroes to send into battle, each with their own special abilities to lend them a strategic edge in a fight. Dungeons will test your reflexes as well, since they’re filled with traps that will require you to make the most of your heroes’ individual skills.

Not only will you find unique loot as you navigate underground puzzles and traps, you’ll also be able to hit town to craft and barter your way to better gear. Random encounters on the overworld with friends and foes alike will keep exploration fresh, and all that procedural generation doesn’t mean there isn’t a meaty story full of colorful characters to uncover.

Take a look at Battle Chasers: Nightwar in action:

If the name Battle Chasers sounds familiar, that’s because it was a comic series that ran through the early 2000s, ending on a cliffhanger that’s never yet been resolved. Writer Joe Madureira left the comics business to work in video games, and has now returned to pick up the setting with Nightwar.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is now available on Steam. For help navigating the tricks, traps, and monsters of this tech-infused fantasy world, be sure to check out the Battle Chasers: Nightwar Wiki.
