The Warhammer fantasy universe predates the Nintendo Entertainment System and modern console/PC gaming by a number of years. Its history is rich and vast as a table top property, and Warhammer has found big success since jumping off of the table top and into the digital world in the form of various video games. One of the most recent Warhammer success stories came in the form of the survival shooter Warhammer End Times: Vermintide. Its Left 4 Dead-meets-Skyrim formula combined the frantic chaos of wave-based shooters with the intimate action of melee-focused, first-person sword swinging. And now, Warhammer: Vermintide 2 looks to pick up where the first game left off, albeit with a number of improvements and new features.

The first Vermintide placed a cast of five different heroes in a bit of a dilemma: an evil, subterranean race of rat men called the Skaven were rising up to swarm and demolish the city of Ubersreik, and they were the only ones capable of rallying the city to stop the invasion. In co-op, this meant that up to four players partied up to run through sections of the city, surviving waves of rat men while completing objectives, slaying bosses, and finding loot. That will be no different in Vermintide 2.

What will change is the setting, now based in Helmgart, a border city in the mountains defending the nation of Britonnia from invaders from the west. The Skaven invaders will now be accompanied by the ruthless and brutal armies of Chaos, made up of mad berserkers and creatures who’s minds and bodies have been twisted by the dark powers of Nurgle, the God of Pestilence. The five playable warriors from the first return, but now with a new career system and skill trees to boot. Instead of just equipping different weapons, characters now have subclasses that can drastically remix the roles that character defines in battle.
