Halloween may have come and gone, but that doesn’t mean horror fans don’t have anything to look forward to in the coming months. 2017 is shaping up to be a big year for PlayStation 4 horror games. So, if you’re not afraid to subject yourself to some scares, draw your blinds, lock the doors, and get ready for your own private horror fest. Here are a few upcoming indie horror games spooky enough to frighten even the bravest gamers.
Outlast 2
Set to release in spring 2017, Outlast 2 is a first-person survival game sequel to the 2013 original. It follows a journalist named Blake Langermann and his wife Lynn who are roaming around Arizona investigating the murder of Jane Doe, a pregnant woman. In the opening scenes, a helicopter crash separates the couple from each other. While traveling through a village, Blake looks for his wife, but it is inhabited by a cult who believe they are soon about to see the end of the days.
This unfolding mystery contributes to the horror and suspense of the game. Outlast 2 seems to be heavily influenced by H.P. Lovecraft and includes numerous disturbing themes like necromancy and poltergeist activity. The final part of the demo is easily the scariest. In this scene, the player is chased through a field without any clue where they are headed.
Visage
SadSquare Studio‘s PS4 horror game, Visage, is set for release in March 2017. Designed by Jonathan Vallieres, it is an independent survival game that takes place inside a huge house that has bore witness to terrible events. Set in a secluded town during the 1980s, players relive fragments of history that slowly reveal the house’s dark past.
Dozens of families have resided in the house, and many of them suffered brutal deaths. Players experience first-hand how different people died in the house, with each of the deaths that occurred having their own visage (hence the name). The experience of watching the death of the families so closely makes Visage particularly scary.
P.A.M.E.L.A.
Set to release in February 2017, this PS4 horror sci-fi game is an open world first-person shooter. P.A.M.E.L.A is set in a utopian city called Eden which includes areas like courtyards, malls, and residential condos.
P.A.M.E.L.A. is more of a sandbox game and doesn’t have any set path that the player should follow. It is the duty (and the headache) of the player to survive in this world and find their way out with the story revealing itself along the way.
The game is all about the darkness which is created as a result of mankind’s misguided pursuit of perfection. It reflects the expense that the residents of the gaming world have to bear because of that. Players assume the role of a “Sleeper” who has just woken up from cryosleep. The player is woken up by Pamela, Eden’s Artificial Intelligence. You and Pamela have to survive together and discover what’s behind the fall of the floating utopia.
Friday the 13th
With an expected release date for early 2017, Friday the 13th is a multiplayer game where one player controls Jason while the others play counselors of various archetypes. The objective of the counselors is to escape Jason and try to survive the night. Efficient teamwork, as well as planning, is enough to defeat Jason. The game comes to an end when all the players are slain by Jason.
Friday the 13th is a semi-open world game that allows players to explore Camp Crystal Lake further. The trailer itself is enough to give you chills let alone the constant fear of Jason chasing you down and murdering you in the most gruesome ways possible.
