Sony Online Entertainment recently held their annual SOE Live event from Las Vegas, Nevada. Think of it as a mini-convention, where fans of SOE games like Everquest, DC Universe Online, and PlanetSide 2 can meet up and exchange stories, meet longtime online friends, and learn more about their favorite games directly from the developers.

One of the games that was talked about in some detail was Sony Online’s upcoming zombie survival MMORPG, H1Z1. If you aren’t aware, H1Z1 will bring players together (and, on occasion, set them against each other) in an effort to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where the dead have risen and are now hellbent on increasing their numbers. While the game remains in closed testing, the developers did reveal a few new nuggets of information that help paint just what kind of world you and your friends will be stepping into.

Throughout the H1N1 panel and all throughout the weekend, Sony Online Entertainment kept asking a single simple question: what’s in the box? The answer will be discovered soon with the inclusion of a new feature: Air Drops. At random times in the game, a plane will fly overhead and drop a crate of supplies somewhere in the middle of the game world. Because of the scarce resources available in the game world, controlling these supplies gives you the upper hand in surviving whatever the world can throw at you.

Of course, everyone else is also after this crate – and are more than willing to put you down to control them. The air drops are designed to bring players together, and while some may rush the crate, others may hang back and pick off those who find themselves in the crosshairs. There may even be some players who are already well-to-do with supplies who see where those packages land and decide that it’s time to move on before the others swarm them.

This wasn’t the only announcement from Sony regarding H1Z1, of course. In addition to the reveal of the new game mode, Sony made official their plans to bring the MMO to the PlayStation 4. Few details were given about the PS4 release, which had been teased by SOE for a few months. No release date has been announced, and no information about differences from the PC version were made.

But rest assured, console-owners – H1Z1 will infect you, too*.

H1Z1 is expected to come to PC as part of Steam’s Early Access at some point this fall, with the PlayStation 4 release expected sometime after. If you want to learn more about the new Air Drop mode, as well as other features in the game you can always check out the H1Z1 Wiki. As more information becomes available, it will serve as your one-stop destination for all the information you could ever need on the different weapons, tools, locations, and other supplies and resources in the game.

*I’m sorry.
