Habitat, the space-themed strategy simulation that lets you forge the future of humanity by piecing together bits of space junk to build massive space stations, has launched its Steam Workshop. Now fans of this out-of-this-world creative exercise can start creating their own garbage that others can use to construct their orbital fortresses.

The game’s developers, 4gency, made the announcement to their community via the game’s Steam Page last Friday. In their announcement post, they explain how players can go about creating their own content. It’s a fairly straightforward exercise, as the game already offers a robust in-game tool set that can be utilized once the player imports their FBX models.

…I’ve lost some of you already, haven’t I. Okay. FilmBoX models are types of 3D models that can be exported from just about any 3D modelling program on the market. Okay? Okay. Now if you’re worried that this limits the potential audience for such a thing because “3D modelling software is expensive,” don’t worry – open source programs like Blender are not only quality modelling tools, but they’re completely free.

You’re welcome.

Once the FBX file is uploaded to the game, the in-game tools will allow players to add textures, assign collision volumes, add mass properties, and attach weld points for when you attach your special piece of space junk to the other pieces of space junk you’ve harvested. At that point you’ll be able to save the new item on your own hard drive, as well as upload it to the Steam Workshop for others to download and include in their own games.

While 4gency is rolling out Habitat‘s Steam Workship today, they promise that this is just the beginning. In the future they intend to expand their support of the Workshop, giving players the power to further create and customize their experience in the game. If you want to see what all of the excitement is about, now’s the time to jump on board! Habitat is currently on sale for 40% – a deal that will last until September 22nd!
