Pathologic places you in the shoes of one of three potential protagonists. One of them is a skilled scientist who believes that his knowledge will rid the world of this illness. The second is the son of a local spiritual leader, and the third is a young woman whose view of the world has been slightly skewed by her experiences. All three playable protagonists have their own unique stories and approaches to battling the plague, giving you multiple ways to experience this dystopian world.
But what sets itself apart from other modern survival games in that you aren’t fighting zombies, or mutants, or some other outside force. Your biggest obstacles are hunger, fatigue, and your ability to fight back disease. As you progress through your journey you’ll have to forage for food, sift through garbage and ruin to find medicine to treat injury and infection. The items that you don’t scavenge for yourself you’ll use to barter with traders to acquire new weapons and gear. After all, in a world where the rules of society are breaking down, you want to be well-prepared for every situation.
Because you’re fighting for your very life every minute of the day, the combat is easy to grasp. This doesn’t make the fights any less challenging, of course, as only one or two well-placed bullets will down you. You’ll learn when to pick your fights, and more importantly, you’ll learn when to run. In this world ammunition for pistols and rifles can be hard to come by, so don’t waste bullets you don’t have to spare.
