It’s a good thing that Firaxis and 2K Games decided to release Civilization: Beyond Earth on a Friday because, well, some of us aren’t seeing the sun for a few days. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen – the latest entry in the epic, addicting time sink is now live!

The latest entry in the critically-acclaimed franchise certainly lives up to its name, as players are whisked away from a dying Earth to forge humanity’s future amongst the stars. Landing on an untamed alien world, you will compete against other settlers – with rival backers – to conquer the planet and shape the future of the human race in your own image.

So, the alien landscape and futuristic technology you’ll be utilizing to bend the world to your will bears more than a passing resemblance to the Sid Meier classic Alpha Centauri, and it’s been said in interviews and previews in the past that this is truly a spiritual successor to that underrated classic. Everything you’d expect to find in a Civilization game is present, meaning that once you start a new game you’ll suddenly find that it’s Thursday and your pets, neighbors, and employer are rather cross with you for some reason.

Civilization: Beyond Earth is available through Steam right now for PC, and while there’s been no announcement of Mac or Linux ports of the game, they’ve typically happened in the past so hope burns eternal.
