The game takes place in Kaidan, a world once known for starships and space travel but now inhabited by a far less advanced civilization. In the game, you’ll play as Olivean de Calinn. On your 21st birthday, a worn messenger arrives on your doorstep and informs you that your father, a successful trader, has been declared an enemy to the Kingdom and hanged. You quickly discover that your father was framed by the notorious Van Talodd, a rival merchant in Kaidan that received all of your father’s assets and estate upon his execution. Now, with only a single cart and a small purse of coin, you must become a trader, grow wealthy, and destory Van Talodd to avenge your father.
Merchants of Kaidan provides players with a complex trading algorithm that’s quite a challenge to master. You’ll have to consider seasons, trade routes, market fluctuations, tavern rumors, and even random catastrophes such as rat infestations. The game contains four story lines, each including many quests. In total, there are over 100 multi-step quests in the game.
