Resident Evil had been one of those series that is equal parts eye catching and soul crushing. While much of the art design is geared to instill fear, some just leave more questions than answers. Sometimes they’re funny in their oddity, other times they’re just damn weird. Let this list pay tribute to the later – examples of when over design goes wrong. Or right, depending on your mood.
Mendez
AKA The Other Trench Coat Guy in Resident Evil 4, Mendez is wearing the coat for good reason. He had a lot of… baggage.
Leech Zombie
So, dip a couple of leeches in the T-virus, and let them fend for themselves. Suddenly, they’re a hive mind that has found some inexplicable way of controlling human corpses by sucking all of their blood, and hanging off of it like a ghillie suit. Listen, I didn’t make it up…
Salazar
Ramon Salazar was a weird little Napoleonic, almost doll-like dwarf when you meet him. When he burst into a giant meat plant, though, is when I knew something was truly wrong with the man.
Nyx
Nyx is a bioweapon that looks like a giant walking squash cyclops with a hand that’s made out of people. Man, was Resident Evil Outbreak weird, or what?
Saddler
Osmund Saddler had a 20 foot tall spider burst out of his face. Because science.
Popokarimu
Better know as “Batipiller” this half bat/half insect beastie terrorizes Chris and Sheva in Resident Evil 5. It also confuses the hell out of anyone playing the game.
Excella
“Im a brilliant, sexy, Italian executive of a huge global bad decision factory!” proclaimed Excella Gionne, right before she burst into a tentacle tree.
William “G” Birkin
Almost as a coded threat from the art designer, showing us all the things that could have been, Birkin has many forms and transformations, each making less sense than the last.
