Berserk’s Beloved 1997 Anime is Finally Available on Blu-ray

Berserk, one of the best animated series of the ’90s–and possibly of all time according to fans–is now out on Blu-ray. While the original series has been released on DVD before, this is a restoration of the original 1997 anime series adapted from the late Kentaro Miura’s dark fantasy manga series. All 25 episodes have been given a high-definition makeover, you can watch in either the English dub or its original Japanese version, and several extras from previous DVD releases have been included.

Following a successful preorder window in which the Blu-ray was a fixture on Amazon’s anime bestseller charts, the Blu-ray released March 26, and it’s already proving difficult to find the physical edition in stock. At the time of writing, both Amazon and Crunchyroll were out of stock. It’s still worth clicking the links below and seeing for yourself, as the current stock situation is only temporary.

There’s also a striking new cover for this Blu-ray, featuring Guts in all his brutal glory. Set in a world where humanity coexists alongside monsters, demons, and gods, Berserk is infamous for its grim atmosphere, savage violence, and heartbreaking moments of betrayal. The series is focused on the wandering swordsman Guts, a battle-scarred warrior seeking vengeance against Griffith, a man he once called his brother-in-arms before he became a godlike being and cost Guts everything.

The first anime series does make a few changes to the manga its adapted from, but it still remains mostly faithful to its source material. In the decades since Berserk first aired, other adaptations have also been released to a mixed reception. The Golden Age original video animations mixed traditional 2D animation with CGI sequences, while a 2016 revival continued the story by covering other manga arcs. This is not a good Berserk adaptation, as it has been heavily criticized for its sub-par animation, pacing issues, and wooden voice-acting. It is watchable–if you dare–and it’s currently available at a massively discounted price.

Alternatively, you can’t go wrong with the Berserk manga. Paperback editions are easy to come by, but the deluxe edition tomes are the way to go. These are gorgeous reprints of the original manga chapters, all wrapped up in an oversized format on quality format paper so that you can really enjoy the fine details of Miura’s elegantly grim art. These hardcover books contain three volumes each and come wrapped eye-catching leatherette. All 14 Berserk deluxe editions would look great on any shelf.
