Since Nick Fury first told Tony Stark about the Avengers Initiative after the credits of 2008’s Iron Man, there have been 21 mid or post-credits scenes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 confirmed to have FIVE scenes during and after the credits, let’s look at how Marvel has perfected the art of the post-credits scene over the years. Here are five of the best MCU codas to date.

Shawarma Time – The Avengers

The Avengers post-credits scene.

This now-iconic moment after the credits of The Avengers has the superhero team sharing a meal together at the Shawarma Palace following the Battle of New York. Beaten and exhausted, the Avengers eat in silence as restaurant workers clean up around them. It’s a quiet moment of friendship that’s fun and unexpected. We’ll always love it.

The Twins – Captain America: Winter Soldier

The end-credits scene from Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The mid-credits scene from Captain America: The Winter Soldier features a foreshadowing of Avengers: Age of Ultron with the introduction of “the twins.” HYDRA’s Wolfgang von Strucker is seen in a secret facility, where various objects, including the Scepter, are being studied. Strucker stops at a pair of cells, where Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are being held. It’s an important scene because it’s the first time characters with these types of powers were seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Howard the Duck – Guardians of the Galaxy

The Collector sits among the rubble of his destroyed museum on Knowhere, seemingly unphased by the damage. As Cosmo licks his face, another of the Collector’s specimens, Howard the Duck, mocks him. The idea of Howard the Duck appearing in Marvel’s big-screen canon is blissfully wonderful enough. Add to that the fact that filmmaker James Gunn and voice actor Seth Green totally nailed the character in just a few seconds of screen time, and it’s left us wanting more Howard.

T’Challa – Captain America: Civil War

Black Panther won’t arrive until 2018, but the mysteries of Wakanda were foreshadowed in the mid-credits scene of Captain America: Civil WarSteve Rogers and Bucky Barnes seek asylum in Wakanda while they look for a cure for Bucky’s brainwashing. T’Challa grants their request, and good lord he’s a badass. Black Panther can’t get here soon enough.

Baby Groot – Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy after the credits scene.

It’s no surprise that Guardians 2 will have FIVE credits scenes when you consider that both of the original’s were among the best of the lot. Baby Groot, a potted twig, dances to The Jackson 5 on the Milano while Drax sharpens his knife. When Drax looks behind him, Groot freezes, only to resume dancing each time Drax turns away. And it’s adorable.

Bottom line? Post-credits scenes that focus on fun moments with the characters we love are better. And teases of upcoming big-screen badassery are nice also. We can’t wait to see what James Gunn has in store for us after the credits of Guardians 2.
