Thor: Ragnarok is shaping up to be a much bigger deal than some of us had originally thought. The movie threw us a big curveball with the announcement of Cate Blanchett as a leading character, and fans have been speculating as to who she could be playing. We may have the answer to that today.
Sources say that Blanchett will be playing Hela, the Asgardian Goddess of Death. Considering that “ragnarok” is the Norse equivalent of “armageddon,” having a personified version of Death makes a whole lot of sense as your big bad. It also continues Marvel’s recent commitment to getting big actors to play their baddies; Robert Redford in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Mads Mikkelsen in Doctor Strange are great examples of this, and it’s looking like Blanchett is going to be joining their ranks.
I wonder: is this how the Marvel Cinematic Universe will get away with not having Death herself in their world? Thanos is famously in love with Death, but is that a concept that even the folks over at Marvel Studios are a little shaky on? Could they instead have Thanos fall in love with Hela, a figurehead for Death? Or will Hela be our backdoor into our first glimpse at Death? Whatever the case may be, this not only has huge ramifications for Thor: Ragnarok but the MCU as a whole.
Plus, Blanchett is a phenomenal actress and whatever her role may be in the bigger picture, you can expect some Galadriel-level awesomeness from her. I hope she isn’t a one-and-done villain because she’s too valuable an asset for Marvel to use once and toss away.
