Horror movies are fun year-round, but they have a special extra zest when released anywhere near the spookiest month of the year. The leaves are changing, it’s getting dark sooner, and Michael Myers is probably sharpening his butcher knife. Instead of watching the television horror show of political debates, take a chance on one of these frightening fall horror films.
Blair Witch
Release date: September 16
We’ve talked about the new Blair Witch film quite a bit here at Fandom, and that’s because it’s amazing. Seventeen years after the release of the original, Blair Witch tells the tale of a group of college students who venture into the Black Hills Forest to uncover the mysteries of what happened in the first film. At first, the group is hopeful, but they quickly realize that the legend of the Blair Witch is no joke. You’re Next author Simon Barrett penned the script. Adam Wingard (You’re Next, The Guest) directs. With two of the best new names in horror at the helm of one of the most unique franchises, Blair Witch is sure to be one scary, shaky ride.
Ouija: Origin of Evil

Ouija came out two years ago to less-than-great reviews, but that’s not going to stop this prequel. Ouija: Origin of Evil tells a new tale about the nefarious board game set in the 1960s. A widowed mother and her two daughters add a new feature to their speaking-with-spirits scam that doesn’t go as planned. The youngest daughter becomes possessed, and they must figure out a way to survive whatever they unleashed with the Ouija and send it back to where it came from. Oculus director Mike Flanagan is at the helm of this spooky story, which releases the week before Halloween.
Rings
Release date: October 28
The latest chapter in the Ring horror franchise, Rings attempts to do something fresh by introducing a new discovery into the mythos. Julia (Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz) worries about her boyfriend, Holt (Alex Roe), after he begins exploring the dark urban legend of a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after viewing. She sacrifices herself to save Holt and makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” (Ringception!) that no one has ever seen before. Rings is the American debut of Spanish director F. Javier Gutiérrez.
Shut In

Shut In stars horror veteran Naomi Watts as a widowed child psychologist who lives in rural New England with her disabled son. When she is caught in a deadly winter storm, she must find a way to rescue a young boy before he disappears forever. Also featuring Room‘s incredible Jacob Tremblay and Stranger Things‘ star Charlie Heaton, Shut In is a thriller about isolation and loss featuring some amazing young actors.
Incarnate
Release date: December 2
From the producers of Insidious and The Purge comes Incarnate, starring Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) and Carice Van Houten (Game of Thrones). Eckhart stars as a wheelchair-bound scientist with the ability to enter the subconscious minds of the possessed. He must save a young boy from the grips of a powerful new demon while also facing the horrors of his own past. The film looks to be part-Insidious, part-The Exorcist. Incarnate is the first horror film directed by Brad Peyton (San Andreas).
Keep Watching
Keep Watching, originally set to be released as Home Invasion, is a horror thriller about a family who are forced by home invaders to kill one another to survive. As the night unfolds, the family learns the game’s mysterious rules and realize that their nightmare is being streamed live all over the world. Keep Watching stars The Walking Dead‘s Chandler Riggs and Boo! A Madea Halloween‘s Bella Thorne. There’s no trailer for the movie out as of this posting, and there are few details other than the premise. I guess we’ll all just have to keep watching and see what this horror flick is all about.
