Samuel L. Jackson and the f-bomb. The two often go hand-in-hand.
The veteran actor — who is famous for uttering profanities in his films — doesn’t disappoint in his latest release, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, out this month on home entertainment.
An upcoming spot (which you can watch above) tallies all of Jackson’s swears in the raucous action flick, which costars Ryan Reynolds and Salma Hayek.
While there are a lot of mother f-bombs dropped in the film, there are sadly not 100. In reality, there are 21 mother f-bombs, and 31 more regular f-bombs (yes, we counted) from Jackson. Reynolds and Hayek have their fair share, as well.
Those figures put Hitman’s Bodyguard third on the list of Jackson films with the most mother f-bombs. 1997’s Jackie Brown featured a whopping 37 mother f-bombs, while 2008’s Soul Men had 24, according to HuffPo.
And while all the profanity may add to the humor and action (of which Hitman’s has plenty), it’s not just on writers whims that they’re thrown into a script.
Swears by the Cure
Jackson is a stutterer, and using profanity — particularly his infamous mother f-bomb — helps keep his stutter under control.
In 2016, he revealed in a Howard Stern interview that the condition made him mute while a teen.
“I stuttered really, really, really bad for a long time,” Jackson explained. “To the point that I stopped speaking for, like, almost a year in school.”
At the 2013 American Institute for Stuttering Gala, the actor admitted he still stutters, but cursing is a cure. He recounted:
“I was the other day on the set of Captain America, and they said ‘Action!” and I said, ‘G-g-g-et …’ It was a G day. So I have my days. I have G days, I have P days, I have B days, I have S days, and I’m still stuttering. But I figured out a way to do it. And some days, the best thing for me to do is say my favorite word, and I get through it: ‘Motherf–ker!'”
Judging by the number of times he uses the word in Hitman’s Bodyguard, those days on set must’ve been pretty manageable.
