M. Night Shyamalan showed new footage from his Unbreakable/Split sequel, Glass, at Comic-Con today and revealed that James McAvoy performs no less than 21 personalities in the movie.
Introducing the film’s trailer, Shyamalan explained, “When Unbreakable came out, it was a weird moment for me… There was kind of a mixed reaction to the movie… It was disheartening a little bit.”
But thanks to the success of Split, and the cult that has since built around Unbreakable, Shyamalan got to make a belated sequel to both movies.
He brought along cast members Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Sarah Paulson, and Anya Taylor-Joy to discuss the forthcoming feature.
The trailer then received its world premiere at the panel, which kicks off with Paulson’s character — a psychiatrist — interviewing Elijah Price, David Dunn, and Kevin Wendell Crumb in a hospital, and explaining that she specialises in dealing with people who believe they are superheroes. We then see scenes from the previous films, as well as disturbing shots from this one, most notably McAvoy’s Beast circling a group of cheerleaders that he has chained up.
A bunch of shots from the movie follow, mainly in a hospital, with some amazing quotes from Jackson’s Elijah Price, the best of them as follows:
“This is not a cartoon, this is the real world.”
“I’ve been waiting for the world to see that we exist.”
“A lot of people are going to die.”
“Are you ready? First name Mr. Last name Glass.”
Speaking of the title character, Jackson said he likes playing Elijah Price because his body is weak, but his mind is strong.
Willis then said of the film, “There are a lot of secrets in this movie that have not been exposed.”
But Shyamalan gave us one tidbit of info: “The reason to come see the movie is the performances,” he explained. “They are world-class performances. It’s jaw-dropping. James [McAvoy] in particular – he does 21 personalities in the movie.”
