UPDATE: Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch surpassed its $400,000 funding goal on the equity crowdfunding platform Fig. The game is currently targeting an early 2018 release. To celebrate the close of the campaign, developer Interabang Entertainment is offering all backers the chance to make a cameo in Kevin Smith’s next movie. Jason Mewes was an unassuming figure in the crowd at GDC last week. With his quiet demeanor, signature long hair pulled back into a ponytail and stuffed underneath a Star Wars baseball cap, and GDC name badge, he could easily have been mistaken for just another game developer attending the show. Only once he began speaking did I start to see hints of the boisterous, fun-loving Jay persona from the View Askewniverse that we were first introduced to in the 1994 breakout indie hit, Clerks.

Since that debut, the Jay character and his counterpart Silent Bob, played by director and writer Kevin Smith, have become a pop culture phenomenon. The characters Jay and Silent Bob and their superhero alter egos, Bluntman and Chronic, have practically become their own entertainment franchise, with appearances in several movies, TV shows, music videos, and comic books. They even have their own action figures.

It seems only fitting that these characters should get their own video game. Now, with the help of developer Interabang, and funding from fans such as yourself, they can. The crowdfunding campaign for Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch launched on Fig.co last month, and has just under a week left to meet their funding goal.

I met with Mewes and the games creative director, Justin Woodward, last week at GDC to learn more about the 2.5D side-scrolling multiplayer brawler, and how much Mewes is involved with the development of Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch.
