If it wasn’t for that pesky Star Wars movie, Jurassic World would have been 2015’s biggest box office smash. The fourth entry in the Jurassic Park series shattered all expectations, and it’s pretty obvious that a sequel was going to happen. Seeing as how director Colin Trevorrow won’t be available because he’ll be busy directing Star Wars: Episode IX (there’s that meddling Star Wars again), the hunt has begun for the person who will helm Jurassic World 2 (my money is on them going with the title Jurassic Worlds. Bank on some of that Aliens magic).
The current buzz has Juan Antonio Bayona as the frontrunner for the position, and that’s a pretty great choice in my opinion. Bayona directed The Orphanage (produced by Guillermo del Toro) back in 2007, showing that he has a real knack for visual storytelling. His upcoming film, A Monster Calls, looks like one of the must-see films of 2016, especially since it shows off Bayona’s ability to tell a fantastic story with the possibility of enormous scope.
Bayona was recently attached to the World War Z sequel but left that project just last week. Could it be in order to accept the job for Jurassic World 2? Here’s hoping that’s the case as Bayona is a director that deserves to be making bigger movies; his true story drama The Impossible makes that very clear.
Trevorrow and Derek Connolly have turned in a screenplay for the sequel, so expect the project to start moving along. Jurassic World 2 is slated for a release date on June 22, 2018. For a movie that demands a lot of effects and a substantial shooting schedule, things need to happen sooner rather than later. If Bayona isn’t the one taking the job, Universal will be quick to snatch someone else up. This movie will be here before you know it. Plenty of time to get people on the Jurassic Worlds train.
