Despite the popularity of the Nintendo Switch, the Japanese gaming giant is desperate to prove that the 3DS family isn’t dead. So much so that we’re getting two new Pokémon adventures exclusively on Nintendo 3DS at the end of the year – Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon.
Arriving on November 17, 2017, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon will tell alternate stories set within the Alola region, which was the locale for the latest games Pokémon Sun and Moon.
According to The Pokémon Company, these two new titles will feature “new additions to the story and features from Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon” when they arrive. And that will include new Pokémon not seen in the original games released at the end of 2016.
In the very brief trailer for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, new Pokémon forms were shown resembling that of the Legendary Pokémon Solgaleo and Lunala from Sun and Moon.
What’s interesting is that these two games have only been announced for the 3DS family at the moment. It’s the fighting game Pokkén Tournament that’s making its way onto the Nintendo Switch, rather than any of the more traditional Pokémon RPGs.
However, there are some online rumblings that this exclusivity may only be temporary.
The Pokémon Company’s international press page briefly stated that the Nintendo Switch was a platform for launching Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, with an exciting TBA for a date.

However, The Pokémon Company has now addressed the listing in a statement confirming that Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon would only be launching on 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS and 2DS XL.
“We would like to address rumours based on a clerical error on the Pokémon pres site,” the statement reads. “Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon are coming exclusively to Nintendo 3DS family of systems and are not due for release on Nintendo Switch.
“The listing on the Pokémon press site was made in error and is not indicative of future plans.”
Whatever you say Pokémon Co. We shall keep a couple of fingers crossed just in case.
