The rumored HD remaster of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was officially confirmed by Executive Producer Todd Howard today during the Bethesda Showcase.

The new version of the game, officially called The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, is coming to the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on Oct. 28, 2016. The Special Edition features graphical enhancements, including our personal favorite, “volumetric god rays” (basically those rays of light you see peeking through clouds), and contains the base game plus the Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn DLC expansions.

The game will also include official mod support, similar to the program recently launched for Fallout 4. This should give console fans who already played through the game and its DLC some incentive reason to come back to the game.

Skyrim Special Edition will be free to PC players who own the original game and all of the expansions, or the Legendary Edition on Steam. No such promotion has been announced for console owners, nor do we expect one to be. The console version is currently available for pre-order and is priced at $59.99.

We predicted a Skyrim remaster was in the works as part of our Bethesda E3 preview. Fan Contributor Seth Jans details why such a remaster is long overdue in the article below.

Check back later this week for our hands-on impressions of Bethesda’s games that are playable here at E3.
