Your time is valuable and at the end of a long week, the discretionary time must be spent to maximum value. In order to help narrow choices down on the film and television front, every Friday we’ll give you the rundown of your options and an educated guess as to which ones make the most sense. There is a very complex formula involved. Usually that formula includes us watching the things and then telling you if they’re good. OK, we admit it’s not exactly the recipe for Coke, but we’re trying to help.

I predicted the box office returns for these films last Sunday, but I must admit that my track record hasn’t been too accurate thus far.

On the Screen

zootopia

Zootopia

Director: Byron Howard, Rich Moore, Jared Bush
Stars: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba
Current RT Meter: 98% Fresh
My box office prediction last Sunday: $45,000,000

A brand new product from Disney Animation. And it’s a winner. Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, and Idris Elba lead a great voice cast in a film that truly appeals to all ages. It’s the story of animals evolving into a civilized order and the repercussions of the growth that creates. Want to know more?

The Verdict: It’s going to kill this weekend. My prediction is going to be about twenty percent short.

londonhasfallen

London Has Fallen

Director: Babak Najafi
Stars: Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett
Current RT Meter: 25% Fresh
My box office prediction last Sunday: $14,000,000

Olympus was only the beginning. Gerard Butler returns as the gritty action hero at the core of this “protect the President” series. Aaron Eckhart’s perfect chin is back as well, and this time he’s in danger as the Prime Minister’s funeral is the stage for a terrorist attack in London and all seems to be lost. My take is in the video below.

The Verdict: It’s not the smartest film ever made but it’s a load of fun.

whiskytangofoxtrot

Whisky Tango Foxtrot

Director: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa
Stars: Tina Fey, Margot Robbie, Martin Freeman, Alfred Molina, Billy Bob Thornton
Current RT Meter: 61% Fresh
My box office prediction last Sunday: $15,000,000

Tina Fey and political commentary is a match made in Heaven and Whisky Tango Foxtrot looks to be the culmination of a lot of her satirical work to date but married with actual drama. With a great cast and a script that was the talk of the town this could be her next step towards world dominance.

The Verdict: The critics haven’t been as kind to it as expected but it’s still almost a sure thing.

On the Tube

House of Cards

Stars: Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Neve Campbell

Netflix’s flagship show returns for its fourth season and though some fans feel it’s starting to lose its lustre, there’s not much fault to find in the considerable verbal sparring between Robin Wright and Kevin Spacey. These are World class talents bringing it episode in and episode out and now that the series is longer as hinged to its British counterpart the sky is the limit.

The Verdict: You gotta love ol’ F.U.

onceuponatime

Once Upon a Time

Stars: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, Josh Dallas, Jared S. Gilmore, Raphael Sbarge

The fifth season of ABC’s fairy tale series arrives with a sixth already ordered. This is the time a show’s life that the cast gets expensive and syndication becomes part of the mix. The goal is always to find ways to keep it fresh without alienating the audience. This is a pivotal time for the show but it has already proven that it’s not a flash in the pan.

The Verdict: You know you love it, so get in there!

Happy hunting! We’ll catch up with you on the other side and see how it went.
