How Powerful Is Rey in ‘The Last Jedi’?

How does someone become so powerful that even Luke Skywalker is afraid of them? That’s the big question surrounding Rey when Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters in December.

Here’s what we know…

Rey is a Force prodigy. That means she’s exceptional. Really exceptional. We saw this in The Force Awakens. Whether it’s flying, fixing things, or fighting with a lightsaber, Rey’s a pretty quick learner, owing to her natural talent.

Even the Force comes naturally to her. Rey saw a powerful vision through the Force where Obi-Wan Kenobi spoke to her. She used a mind trick against a stormtrooper on Starkiller Base. Those are no small feats.

The only other person Luke ever saw with such raw power was his nephew, Ben Solo. Luke thought he could train Ben, but the boy turned to the dark side. Now he goes by the name Kylo Ren, and he’s Rey’s enemy — but also her would-be teacher. Kylo’s already made an attempt to turn her to the dark side, and it seems like he’ll try to do the same thing in The Last Jedi.

Is Luke right to be afraid? Will history repeat itself?

Exceptionally powerful Jedi have a history flirting with the dark side. Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. Luke himself nearly gave into evil when he fought Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi, but he came to his senses. Kylo followed Anakin’s path. Rey now has to make the choice about what to do with her powers as well.

Is she good? Or will she follow another path?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will start to answer these questions on December 15th.
