Dwarves have been a staple of video games for decades, but this year the mythical beings are set to take center-stage in a new game based on Markus Heitz’s hugely popular series of novels, The Dwarves. The tactical RPG is being developed with the author acting as a consultant, and looks set to be both a faithful adaptation of his work and an engrossing title in its own right.
It’s easy to imagine a standard dwarf — diminutive size, a bushy beard, and at least one axe — but the cast of The Dwarves offers more variety than you might expect. There are fifteen characters to choose from, and each has their own unique skillset. Players will need to know their party inside and out so that they can decide who is best positioned to tackle any given challenge.
Anything can happen as The Dwarves quest across Girdlegard. However, one thing can be expected with some certainty: the odds are unlikely to be in your favor.
It’s not unusual for your band of dwarves to be accosted by groups of over 100 enemies. In these situations, it’s useful to take close control of your forces — you can pause battles at any time to make sure that your next move is the best possible action.
Using this ability to maintain a tactical advantage is crucial, given the many different threats you’ll have to face as you trek through your adventure. Looming ogres, rotting zombies, devious dark mages, and hideous orcs are just a sample of the beasts and baddies you’ll have to tackle on your way.
The Dwarves is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Learn about the game on its official website — and don’t forget to check out the Official The Dwarves Wiki.
