With a new season comes a whole new array of anime shows and sequels that become a must-see for this fall. From sports to prison-themed anime this fall season will check off almost every anime theme out there. Here’s a list of 15 must-see fall 2016 anime.

Haikyuu!! – Season Three

The most anticipated anime of this fall, Haikyuu!! reaches season three. In the new season, we will see how the Karasuno volleyball team face off against one of the nation’s top competitors Shiratorizawa and their star player Wakatoshi Ushijima.

All Out!!

All Out!! is a collaboration between anime studios TMS Entertainment and Madhouse. The sports anime follows Kenji Gion who joins his school’s rugby team and learns the meaning of teamwork. All Out!! is a combination of wacky characters with different personalities and physiques who must come together and be the best rugby team there is.

Natsume’s Book of Friends – Season Five

Natsume’s Book of Friends season five is the fifth sequel to the slice-of-life anime. It follows Natsume who has been able to see youkai — supernatural monsters, spirits, and demons in Japanese folklore — ever since he was a young boy. The series deals with the full spectrum of raw emotions, everything from uplifting to absolutely heartbreaking.

Yuri!!! on Ice

While figure skating is a beautiful sport, we rarely see the pressure that these athletes go through to achieve their amazing stunts and above all, represent their country. Yuri!!! on Ice follows the story of figure skater Yūuri Katsuki who returns to the scene of a crushing defeat he suffered earlier in his career. But, this time, he has to compete against a young Russian figure skater also named Yuri.

Izetta, the Last Witch

For those who are interested in a more mature series, Izetta, the Last Witch is not to be missed. The historical anime tells an alternate version of the events surrounding World War II. The series has strong female leads and details the story of a country’s last line of defense — a witch.

Occultic; Nine

From fan service to mystery Occultic; Nine covers almost every anime theme there is. The series follows nine individuals who are linked through their interaction on an occult-themed blog. However, the anomalies that occur around these nine leads to a larger, unimaginable event that may change everything that is considered common sense in this world. The series covers mind-bending theories that any mystery buff would love accompanied by great animation.

Bungou Stray Dogs – Season Two

The second season of the hit supernatural and mystery anime Bungou Stray Dogs is back. The sequel continues the story of orphans who join a supernatural detective agency. The series takes famous Japanese authors and characters of their works of and gives them special abilities. Thus, appealing to both literary buffs and anime fans.

Ajin: Demi-Human – Season Two

The Polygon Pictures hit Ajin returns for a second term this fall. The first season left off with Satō making a public broadcast, announcing a Second Wave to assassinate 15 people involved in the conspiracy against Ajin and his intentions if his demands are not met. While many fans were put off by the CG animation style, it made it up for it with its impressive action sequences and plot.

March Comes in Like a Lion

Shaft, the studio that brought us fantastic series such as Madoka Magica and Bakemonogatari now brings us March Comes in Like a Lion. The series follows Rei a 17-year-old professional shōgi — Japanese chess player — who lives by himself. The series is a breath of fresh air from a studio better known for its female-focused leads and characters.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphan – Season Two

The second season of Iron-Blooded Orphans follows a group of child soldiers who are assigned to protect a woman named Kudelia who plans to secure the independent of the Martian city of Chryse. Like many other shows in the Gundam franchise, Iron-Blooded is not to missed.

Magical Girl Raising Project

Fans of RPG and Magical Girl-themed anime such as SAO and Madoka Magica will fall in love with Magical Girl Raising Project. The survival game anime centers around a social game called The Magical Girl Raising Project. The game allows one in thousands to be a magical girl. However, this all changes as one district containing 16 magical girls has to halve its number of magical girls to solve the issue of magical energy. But, everything changes when the game suddenly becomes a deadly battle for survival.


Having a similar animation style as the popular series Attack on Titan, the samurai anime Drifters follows a group of samurai who finds themselves transported to other worlds where they must fight to the death. Drifters is filled with intense battle scenes, unexpected music themes, and above all, bloodshed.


Taking place in the near future, Trickster follows a mysterious boy named Yoshio Kobayashi with a mysterious power that stops him from dying and brings bad luck to anyone who gets too close to him. However, Hanasaki from the Boys Detective Club — a group dedicated to protecting the city from evil — wants Yoshio to join them.

Keijo!!!!!!!! combines comedy, sports, and ecchi into one. Simply put, this 2016 anime is about women battling with their butts and breasts. The series steps into the world of Keijo, a sport where girls stand on a small floating platform and compete against one another. The aim of the Keijo is to push the other participant off of the platform into the water. However, they are only allowed to use their butt or breasts to push the other off.

Poco’s Udon World

Last on our fall 2016 anime list is Poco’s Udon World. The slice-of-life anime tells the story of Tokyo-based web designer Sōta Tawara who returns to his hometown of Kagawa. However, upon returning home, he sees a strange child in his family’s udon shop. The child can’t speak but has both ears and a tail. Not only does the series feature an array of home-cooked meals it is also full of emotions. Fans of Sweetness & Lightning will find Poco’s Udon World a suitable replacement.
