If you’re looking for the return of arcade-style sports, there’s an orcish fullback bearing a violent pigskin with your name on it. Mutant Football League has at long last brought its violent take on gridiron action to consoles after releasing on PC earlier this year, allowing you to pit teams of monsters and mutants against one another in sporting action that’s equal parts strategy and brutality.

This latest game is a successor to EA’s classic Mutant Football League game that released back in 1993 for the Sega Genesis. Your 18 teams include the likes of the Midway Mutants, Cardinal Sins, and Orcs of Hazzard for 7-on-7 gameplay. Naturally, these teams don’t play it straight — you’ve got plenty of options to bend the rules, from bribing the ref to making use of bombs, shotguns, and chainsaws to carve your way to a touchdown. The fields themselves are covered in booby traps, mines, moats, and more to make the journey that much more challenging.

All the action is called by Tim Kitzrow, who you’ll recognize as the voice behind other arcade sport classics like NBA Jam and NFL Blitz (boomshakalaka, indeed). You can get into exhibition, practice, playoff, or full season modes, and challenge your friends in two player online or four player local multiplayer. More ways to play are on the way, too, including a dynasty mode that will have you take a rookie team to ultimate glory.

Here’s what Mutant Football League looks like in action:

If you want to score your next digital touchdown in the most brutal way possible, Mutant Football League is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Don’t forget to pick your team and get your playbooks straight with the Official Mutant Football League Wiki.
