You are probably familiar with The Walking Dead by now, as it is a global property that can’t stop being everywhere at all times. But I don’t mean the TV show with the guy who hallucinates and the lady with the katana that’s been on for what feels like 20 years. I don’t even mean the series of hit adventure games developed by the recently shuttered Telltale Games, or the comics which inspired it all. This new Walking Dead, Overkill’s The Walking Dead, is a different animal completely.
Based in the universe of The Walking Dead comic series, Overkill’s The Walking Dead is an action packed romp through a fallen Washington, D.C.. You play as one of a group of four survivors, who’ve found safety and necessity in one another. Each character brings something unique to the group, with their own special abilities and personal skill trees. You’ll be tasked to work together to find stockpiles of supplies or to defend you camp from an onslaught of the undead. Different missions provide different avenues of gameplay, tactics, and decision-making. Sometimes, the stealthy approach is an powerful option. Other times, the best way is very loud and through the front door. You and your squad decide.
Dynamic, team-based shooting is sort of Overkill’s thing. A subsidiary of Starbreeze Studios (developers of the excellent Chronicles of Riddick games and The Darkness), Overkill has done great things to the house that Left 4 Dead built with Payday: The Heist and PAYDAY 2. This zombie shooter has a lot of the same skeleton as those games, but with less safes to crack and more heads to bash.
