Don’t worry, Game of Thrones fans.
The show wasn’t snubbed by the Television Academy during this morning’s 2017 Emmy nominations. The HBO drama is ineligble for this year’s awards. To qualify for the 2017 Emmys, a show had to air episodes between June 1, 2016, and May 31, 2017.
The final four episodes from Season 6 — The Broken Man, No One, Battle of the Bastards, and The Winds of Winter — actually did air during the window, but they are considered part of the previous eligibility period.
Game of Thrones took home a whopping twelve trophies at the 2016 Emmys, bringing its total tally to 38 – more than any other fictional series in history.
This year marks first time since 2011 (it’s first season) that Game of Thrones is not in contention. It won Outstanding Drama in 2015 and 2016. Season 7 premieres this Sunday, July 16.
The same rule applies to Season 2 of Outlander; the fan favorite show is also ineligible this year.
Ditto for Orphan Black, which saw lead Tatiana Maslany take the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series prize last year. Interesting, no Game of Thrones actress has ever been nominated in that category, only Supporting Actress (Emilia Clarke has been nominated for her portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen three times; Lena Headey and Maisie Williams were nominated for their first Emmys last year for playing Cersei Lannister and Arya Stark, respectively).
Peter Dinklage has won two Supporting Actor Emmys in five nominations for his role as Tyrion Lannister.
Westworld and Saturday Night Live top this year’s nominations, with 22 a piece. Stranger Things, last year’s breakout hit from Netflix, has 19.
The 2017 Emmy Awards will air Sunday, September 17, 2017.
