Season 2 of Voltron: Legendary Defender was released on Netflix on Friday, and it exceeded any and all expectations one could have possibly hoped for. It was brilliantly written in a way that left me on the edge of my seat even after the credits. But if you’re anything like me, then you’re already eager for what will hopefully be a confirmed season 3.
The cliffhanger left at the end of “Blackout” definitely points towards one, anyway. And while it might be awhile until we get that confirmation, there’s always plenty of fun speculation to be made. Here are five things that will hopefully be addressed in season 3.
What happened to Shiro at the end?
The most pressing question is what happened to our black paladin, Shiro? The last episode wraps up after an intense battle between Voltron and Zarkon. After the paladins seemingly defeat Zarkon, they check the black lion only to find Shiro missing, though his bayard is still there. It did seem like Zarkon was trying to fight for dominance of the black lion via mind connection, so it’s possible that Shiro ended up in some mind realm. Wherever he is, though, this might mean that we’ll see Keith (temporarily) take over as leader of Voltron, as he was Shiro’s appointed successor.
What’s the rest of Keith’s backstory?
Speaking of Keith, he received a lot of character development in season two. In “The Blade of Marmora,” Keith finally gets some insight into his past and learns that he is part Galra. But so much is left unanswered, which sets him up to dig even deeper in season three.
Who is his mom? Since we see that his dad’s human, does that mean she is Galra, or is it a more distant relative? And why does his dad look strangely similar to Shiro? Are Keith and Shiro actually brothers? And how did Keith get his knife, a blade of Marmora? Our emo red pilot just got a whole lot more mysterious.
Where’s Pidge’s family?
A big part of season one was Pidge looking for her father and brother, who were initially captured by the Galra along with Shiro during their Kerberos mission. But in season two, this plot line is only briefly addressed, mainly in “Escape from Beta Traz.” Pidge searches the prison’s records for any sign of her brother and finds some footage of rebels taking him away. So now that she knows he’s still out there, she will probably look for those rebels next.
What is Haggar’s history?
During Voltron’s final battle with Zarkon, Princess Allura goes off to fight Haggar, Zarkon’s right-hand Druid. Allura gets a hit in that sends Haggar to the ground, knocking off her hood and revealing that she is Altean – just like Allura. This will surely get some attention from the crew in future episodes. Just how, exactly, did a member of the Altean civilization get mixed in with the likes of the Galra empire? Why? And since there were some rising tensions between Haggar and Zarkon during season two, does that mean she could possibly be swayed to Team Voltron’s side? It’s a complicated situation, no doubt, but a very intriguing one.
How did Zarkon become evil?
We get a peek at the black lion’s past in “Space Mall” and learn that King Alfor built it from a comet for Zarkon to fight in. But what happened to him? Why did Zarkon turn evil and create an empire across the universe? He could’ve just been plain power-hungry, or perhaps he truly thought his plan would do good. The history of the paladins has quite a few pieces to fill in, but this is by far the biggest.
The latest season of Voltron is nothing short of incredible and jaw-dropping. It should be enjoyed to the fullest, but the mysteries left to explore in season 3 are definitely something to keep the excitement going.
