The Flock, an intense asymmetrical online multiplayer game, allows players to navigate a ghastly, dark atmosphere while taking one of two roles – the hunter or the prey. The game is currently being developed by Vogelsap, an indie development team comprised entirely of students. The Flock originally began as a school project, but quickly rose in popularity thanks to the game’s intuitive design and thrilling teaser trailer. Gamepedia has partnered with Vogelsap to bring you the Official The Flock Wiki, your ultimate source for game mechanics, recent updates, and more.
When first starting the game, each player begins as one of the Flock, a race of horrid monsters. The players will then begin their search for the coveted Light Artifact. Once a player grabs the Artifact, you’ll undergo a transformation. Your quick, agile body will transform into a fragile, slow-moving Carrier. The longer you hold the Artifact as the Carrier, the more points you’ll score. The Artifact you carry emits a bright beam of light, allowing the Flock to better determine your location. So, how can the Carrier survive against faster, stronger enemies – especially with a giant, glowing Artifact? The same light that gives away your presence also keeps you safe; if the Flock move in the light, they die. However, the Flock turn to stone when standing still, and they’ll be immune to the light as long as they’re immobile.
The entire game is a heart-racing quest for survival. As the prey, you’ll avoid enemy detection and protect yourself with a light beam. As the hunter, you’ll search fiercely for the Carrier and the Artifact. Players will continually switch roles throughout the game.
The Flock has already accumulated a commendable amount of recognition, including “Best Student Game” winner from the Dutch Game Awards and “Most Promising Game” nominee from Indie Prize Showcase. The game has been in development since 2013 and recently went into a closed Alpha at the end of last year. In fact, they received over 1500 alpha registrants in only 48 hours. Though the closed Alpha is no longer available, you can still view the trailer below. It successfully embodies the horror and fervor of gameplay.
