Box Office: What Is Old Is New

A huge snowstorm, horrible reviews for the new films opening, and a swath of indifference led this weekend’s box office receipts to be unspectacular. So much so in fact that the top three films were all holdovers. The Revenant came in at number one with an estimated $16,000,000 while Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens rose a notch to the number two spot with an estimated $14,257,00. The all-time domestic box office champ has amassed an astounding $879,289,346 to date. Ride Along 2 dropped almost 65% to pull in $12,960,000, which is usually a sign that it’s going to fade rather fast.

The newcomers got decimated. Dirty Grandpa was one of the most critically ravaged films in years and as a result managed to pull in a surprisingly low $11,525,000. Luckily for Zac Efron and Robert DeNiro, they both have a full slate of projects that’ll render this a speed bump rather than a stop sign. The Boy did fine for what it is with an estimated $11,260,000, and it’s not outside the realm of possibility that the film could eventually be considered a minor hit considering its relatively low budget. The 5th Wave is a failure. There’s no other way to put it. $10,700,000 against a budget of just under $40,000,000 before marketing is a death knell for the potential YA franchise.

Next week looks to bring with it some large numbers and with that let’s see how badly I do.

The Numbers Game

I’ve added a little fun into the box office report. A little guessing game. Let’s see how close we can get to guessing the correct box office numbers for the movies opening next week.

Last Week:

The Boy
My Guess: $12,000,000
Actual: $11,260,000
Result: Excellent!

Dirty Grandpa
My Guess: $30,000,000
Actual: $11,525,000
Result: What an idiot.

The 5th Wave
My Guess: $22,000,000
Actual: $10,700,000
Result: Not even close, bud!

Kung Fu Panda 3

The Kung Fu Panda series has shown to be the real deal and though the second film grossed considerably less than the first there’s still enough interest to assume that next weekend will be ruled by the Dreamworks feature. There hasn’t been nearly as much marketing as expected but the families will be out in droves.

My guess: $35,000,000

The Finest Hours

finest

Has there been a film with this much A-list talent in recent memory that’s made less of an impression? Chris Pine, Eric Bana, Casey Affleck, and Ben Foster have their work cut out for them. The Finest Hours or just the mediocre ones? It certainly doesn’t help that the movie looks like it boasts special effects from 2002.

My guess: $8,000,000

Fifty Shades of Black

Somehow Marlon Wayans continues to make low budget spoofs of successful movies. The box office receipts for the Scary Movie and A Haunted House greatly eclipsed their meager budgets and this will probably continue the trend. Even though 50 Shades of Grey faded from memory rather quick there’s no reason to think this offering won’t at least secure second place.

My guess: $15,000,000

See you next week!
